A column in a recent issue carries a reference to recognition by physicians recently assembled in Washington of the effect of the mind on the body, and also a statement which might leave the impression that Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, had little respect for physicians. In fairness to Mrs. Eddy and also to physicians, this short statement of Mrs. Eddy's attitude as indicated by her writings is submitted. On page 151 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy wrote: "Great respect is due the motives and philanthropy of the higher class of physicians. We know that if they understood the Science of Mind-healing, and were in possession of the enlarged power it confers to benefit the race physically and spiritually, they would rejoice with us. Even this one reform in medicine would ultimately deliver mankind from the awful and oppressive bondage now enforced by false theories, from which multitudes would gladly escape." Again in her work, "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 4), appears the following: "A genuine Christian Scientist loves Protestant and Catholic, D.D. and M.D.,—loves all who love God, good; and he loves his enemies. It will be found that, instead of opposing, such an individual subserves the interests of both medical faculty and Christianity, and they thrive together, learning that Mind-power is good will towards men. Thus unfolding the true metal in character, the iron in human nature rusts away; honesty and justice characterize the seeker and finder of Christian Science."

Particular attention is called to the statement that, instead of opposing others, students of Christian Science are enjoined to learn "that Mind-power is good will towards men." The day is surely approaching when one of the outstanding tests of good citizenship will be a willingness wholeheartedly to permit freedom of choice in matters of religion and medicine, each group being permitted to stand or fall on the basis of its own proved merit or demerit, each group rejoicing in genuine progress in all other groups, and in this spirit Christian Scientists rejoice with physicians in the progress they are making and appreciate the sincerity of purpose on the part of most of them on behalf of mankind.
