The Supremacy of Mind

In the chapter "Recapitulation" in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 469), its author, Mary Baker Eddy, asks the question, "What is Mind?" and her reply presents the truth of the allness of God, which when apprehended enables the student to demonstrate the Principle of Christian Science in healing the sick, reforming the sinner, correcting wrong traits of character, and dispelling the fear of lack or limitation.

Through education, association, environment, and human standards, mortals had been led into believing the time-worn lie that intelligence exists apart from God; that it is dependent upon the gray matter of the brain; and that it wields an influence over mortals for good or evil. The way out of this position is made so plain by Mrs. Eddy in Christian Science, that anyone embracing her teachings can grasp the fundamental truths that Mind is God, good; that all that He creates is like Him, good; and that, therefore, evil was never created by Him, and is consequently without power or presence.

Under the caption, "Origin of Evil" (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 346), our Leader says: "Evil never did exist as an entity. It is but a belief that there is an opposite intelligence to God. This belief is a species of idolatry, and is not more true or real than that an image graven on wood or stone is God." A study of this article in its entirety should convince anyone with an open mind that evil is indeed nothing—a myth, a lie, a pretender, a usurper without power or existence; and as he grasps its nothingness he will cease to believe or fear it.

Few of the Bible characters endured greater trials and afflictions than Job; yet in the midst of these he cried, "Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!" As Job's consciousness became enlightened he realized the presence of God, and declared: "He is in one mind, and who can turn him?" and then he proved that he understood this truth as a spiritual fact, with the result that his health was restored and he enjoyed greater prosperity at his latter end than he did at the beginning.

Christ Jesus, the Way-shower, understood the allness of God, good; and he demonstrated his understanding as none other ever did, by healing the diseased, the sinning, the lame, the halt, the blind, by casting out demons, by feeding the multitudes and raising the dead. Not once did he admit the evidence of the material senses as real, but in every case, and on every hand, he dismissed the evidence with the proof that it was unreal, untrue.

To this age came a humble, unselfish, courageous, and self-sacrificing gentlewoman, Mary Baker Eddy, a true follower of the humble Nazarene, who discovered and founded Christian Science. By her discovery Mrs. Eddy reinstated primitive Christianity; and in her earnest desire to be of service to sick, sinning, suffering humanity, she presented Christian Science to the world. This teaching is a clear exposition of the divine Principle of healing, which Jesus revealed and demonstrated; and loyal Christian Scientists who study the Holy Bible and all of Mrs. Eddy's writings are demonstrating this Principle and, in consequence, are rising above the mists of so-called mortal mind, with all its mesmeric suggestions, and are enjoying greater freedom, expressed in sounder morals, better health, more faithful friends, good business, good neighbors, and good will to all mankind.

Divine Mind, God, is ever active. The pure stream of God's ideas—the holy thoughts of Mind—is continuously flowing without hindrance: there can be no stoppage of Mind's harmonious action. Nothing can interfere with or change the free course of Mind's ideas; and were this more fully understood, what a happy world ours would be in which to dwell! Mankind would enjoy greater freedom. Strife, friction, contention, and war would cease; and love and good will would be evidenced on every hand.

Every mesmeric suggestion of the carnal mind, however insistent or persistent its claim to recognition, must be overcome through the realization of the allness of Mind, God, good, and the consequent understanding of evil's nothingness. It is man's inherent right, yea moral right, as the child of God, to be free, to enjoy happiness, harmony, contentment, gratitude, good will, good cheer, good health, peace, and plenty.

"Mind alone possesses all faculties, perception, and comprehension," writes Mrs. Eddy in Science and Health (p. 488). Every problem confronting the Christian Scientist must be overcome through the application of the Principle of this Science, whether in business, social, civil, political, or church activities. We must ever look away from person to Principle for guidance in the daily round and, remaining steadfast to our trust and relying absolutely on infinite Mind, we shall prove that "all things work together for good to them that love God."
