"Jesus wept"

Christian scientists are sometimes erroneously thought to be unsympathetic toward the unhappy experiences of others; yet the teachings of Christian Science as presented by its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy, inculcate love for friends, neighbors, and even enemies; and its students are learning to be more observant, more truly helpful, and more constructively sympathetic each day to all so-called tearful experiences.

In the eleventh chapter of the Gospel of John occurs the account of that experience, so inspiring and so dear to all of us, in which Christ Jesus demonstrated for Lazarus dominion over the belief of death through the understanding of Life eternal. It recounts that Jesus took each step in an orderly way; and the narrative helpfully includes the human experience, expressing and making clear just what happened.

In this record we read that "Jesus wept." As Christian Scientists, we understand that Jesus did not weep because of Lazarus' experience of death, for that was about to be overcome. Surely he must have wept because of the ignorance, the lack of understanding that prevailed among the friends of Lazarus. Nevertheless, the tears which the gentle Master shed could not have expressed less than compassion and kindliness toward all.
