[Written for the Sentinel]

Our Goal

To hold such kindness in our every thought
That even those we chance to meet
In ways most casual may sometimes feel
A gentle sense of peace,
A pure serenity,
As when the sweet and unexpected breath
Of flowers rare
May sometimes steal upon us unaware,
And leave us strangely glad.

To know so surely in the hours of storm
The all-sufficing love of God,
That those who sit in sorrow or in pain
May see the radiance of unswerving faith,
And so take heart again,
As weary men on storm-tossed ships at sea
Turn eagerly
To beacon lights ashore.

To hold our lives so full of truth and love
That those who yearn may sense a Christlike touch,
And come to us for healing, and depart
With answered prayer,
With grateful heart
To seek anew the Father's love,
As simply as the little child
Will seek the comfort of its mother's arms
And finding solace, slip away
On dancing feet again to play
With happiness.
