In November, 1910, my daughter hurt her shin, the injury...

In November, 1910, my daughter hurt her shin, the injury resulting in ulcers that did not heal, but continually grew worse. I knew nothing of Christian Science at that time; therefore I employed a physician, who prescribed various remedies. I also did everything I knew of, and everything my friends recommended; but the difficulty steadily increased. There were no Christian Scientists where I lived, but I had a friend in a distant city who was a Christian Science practitioner. Late in February, 1911, I decided to write to her and ask for help in Christian Science. As I sent the letter out to be mailed, I said to my daughter, "She ought to get this on Monday afternoon." On Tuesday morning, when I removed the bandages, the open places were healed; and the healing has been perfect and permanent. As a result of this healing, I began to study Christian Science literature, and I never afterward used medicine for myself or my children.

During an epidemic, I lived in a navy yard city where contagion seemed to gain a foothold and be especially virulent. Frantic appeals for help, to aid in the care of those in the overcrowded hospitals, were sent out by officials in charge. I volunteered to go a part of each day, and was immediately called to the general hospital. At the end of a very hard day I went home and to bed with what, to sense, looked like a very well-developed case of the disease. By midnight my suffering was intense, but I could still work for myself. I thought of all those patients and the worn-out attendants, with no one to get them anything to eat the next morning. I felt I had to be there, and I had faith that all things were possible to God. I began repeating the ninety-first psalm, but when I got to "neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling," I stopped and asked myself: What is my dwelling? Where am I dwelling? I remembered that Mrs. Eddy says in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 578) that the house of the Lord is the consciousness of Love. I knew that if I were dwelling in "the secret place of the most High," in the house of the Lord, in the consciousness of Love, no plague could possibly enter there. I clung to this until half past three, when I fell asleep. My alarm clock roused me at five. I arose and dressed, not only perfectly healed, but feeling so uplifted and exalted that I scarcely knew my feet touched the ground as I walked to the hospital.

These and many other beautiful demonstrations over sickness, over loss, over lack, have helped me to realize man's dominion and his eternal unity with the Father. I am grateful beyond the power of words to express for what understanding I have of Christian Science. I am grateful for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church, for class instruction with one of Mrs. Eddy's loyal students; and, above all, I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for her patient, loving labor in preparing the way for us in Christian Science.
