Before I left for camp as an officer in the Reserve Corps...

Before I left for camp as an officer in the Reserve Corps my sister sent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. A few weeks prior to sailing for France, one who had at one time been a physician gave me a small khaki-covered Science and Health and said, "Take this along with you; you will find it very valuable." I took both copies and put them in the bottom of my trunk. Not realizing what a blessing they contained I did not read them at all while in France, though I visited several Christian Science War Relief Rooms and was greatly impressed with the peaceful atmosphere that seemed to pervade these rooms.

After receiving my discharge from the army I returned to the university which I had been attending before the war, to finish my course. I seemed to be suffering from what I thought was the effect of gas and hereditary pulmonary disease. I was taking medicine continually, but seemed to be growing worse all the time. Added to this, I also contracted what the doctors called "sinus trouble," which they said would recur each year.

On leaving the university I went to Indianapolis to work, and while I was there a very severe attack of the sinus trouble became manifest. I went to a specialist, and he said that an operation might help me. The man with whom I was working, though not a Scientist, suggested that I try Christian Science. He gave me the name of a practitioner, whom I went to see. Great was my surprise and joy when, while I was walking down the street after leaving the practitioner's office, a great weight seemed to be lifted from me and I realized I was healed.

Several months after this the thought came to me that if Christian Science is good for one ailment it must be good for all, so I went to a practitioner for help for my eyes. Before leaving his office I took off my glasses, which a well-known oculist had said I would always need, and again I found I was healed. I then thought that all of my troubles were over, and that I would not need to study any more in the Bible or in Science and Health!

As a result of continued wrong thinking I had another attack of the sinus trouble, and after several weeks' treatment by a Christian Science practitioner with no apparent results, I had an operation performed by a well-known surgeon. Instead of the operation helping the condition, it grew worse, and I was then willing to rely wholly on Christian Science. With the loving help of the same practitioner, I was completely healed. I then learned to realize the value of systematic daily study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's works. Some time after this healing I was also healed of blood poisoning. These healings have been permanent.

The experience gained as a result of the healing of blood poisoning has been very helpful. Having been reared in a home where one of the family was a doctor and another was a surgeon, and having at one time been superintendent of production for a large drug concern, I seemed to be greatly tempted to use some material remedy; but every time the thought of using a material remedy presented its lying claims, the counter fact, that we cannot serve two masters, came to me and prevailed.

Even after several weeks of faithful and loving help the condition seemed to be worse. I knew that if a surgeon were to see my condition he would undoubtedly insist on amputating my foot. When the condition seemed to be at its worst the practitioner quoted to me from page 12 of "Miscellaneous Writings," "Hate no one; for hatred is a plague-spot that spreads its virus and kills at last," and from Science and Health (p. 339), "Love destroys hate." She then asked me what I was thinking at the time the accident occurred from which the blood poisoning seemed to originate. It instantly came to me that I was thinking all kinds of resentful and hateful thoughts about one who was near me. I immediately began to change my thinking, and to realize the truth as we are taught to do in Christian Science. The healing was practically instantaneous. The next evening I attended the midweek testimony meeting.

Through the constant study of Science and Health and other works written by our Leader, the Bible has become a new book to me, filled with untold treasures of good. I have learned that there are no so-called outside helps needed in the study of Christian Science, for its textbooks reveal the whole truth in the simplest way in which it would be possible to reveal the truth. We need only to practice it. Through His revelation of Christian Science, God truly has placed a wide-open door to boundless good before us, which no one can close; and I am deeply grateful for every activity of the Christian Science movement.

It is with a heart filled with gratitude to God for Christ Jesus, the Way-shower; for our dear Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, who has shown us how to walk in the way; for class instruction under a loyal teacher; and for the many blessings that have come and are coming daily to me and to millions of others throughout the world, that I send this testimony.
