The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Stuttgart, Germany (First Church).

Lecturer: Miss Margaret Murney Glenn; introduced by Major-General August Kündinger, who said:—

When Christ Jesus gave humanity his teaching, "Love your enemies," he no doubt signified the most stupendous change in the way of thinking that had ever been demanded of mankind. Only a small group of disciples followed the Master then, and proved their understanding of his words by doing the works that he did. To-day the whole civilized world acknowledges the teachings of Jesus, but, just as two thousand years ago, mankind seems unable to love its enemies. Again Truth is knocking at the door of humanity, and unlocking through Christian Science the understanding of the Master's teaching; and, emanating from the truth of God's allness, a way is being indicated which shows that it is not only requisite to love one's enemies, but perfectly unreasonable to hate them. Again we see, as the result of the understanding of Christian Science, the sick healed and the sinner reformed. I can speak from experience; for I was healed in Christian Science of a chronic complaint, which seemed to sentence me to a lingering illness: I was again given new life.

La Grange, Illinois (First Church).

Lecturer: Bicknell Young; introduced by Melvin Wilbur Smith, who said:—

People are looking more earnestly than ever before for relief from their troubles and for an earnest of immortality. Unnumbered thousands are depending entirely on Christian Science for help; and it never fails. Christian Science denies the once popular belief that God sends evil, and proves that infinite Mind creates and maintains everything good, and good only. Over twenty years ago I first heard a lecture on Christian Science, and for me the dark clouds of evil began to clear away, and the bright sunshine of good gradually entered my experience. I was then in the midst of sickness, discouragement from lack of remunerative employment, absence by a thousand miles from kindred, and grief from the passing away of three very dear relatives. I awakened to the hope that Christian Science might be the way out of my troubles. I began to attend the church services and to study our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. And from that time to this the way has grown brighter and happier.

San Francisco, California (First Church).

Lecturer: Prof. Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Mrs. Constance L. Dean, who said:—

All humanity desires good, but its varying false ideals as to what constitutes that deeply desired good keep it from the kingdom of heaven here and now. Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 186): "If mortal mind knew how to be better, it would be better. Since it must believe in something besides itself, it enthrones matter as deity." Yet Christ Jesus, whose life is the highest expression of good that humanity has ever known, proclaimed and proved by his works that matter, far from being deity, is powerless. "It is the spirit that quickeneth," he declared; "the flesh profiteth nothing." Millions through the centuries since have sought to follow the Master's teachings, but have not understood how to bring forth the promised fruits of good, because they have not grasped the fact that God, being Spirit, could not make material laws to govern His idea, man. It was not until the present age that one arose spiritual enough to perceive that divine law governs the kingdom of heaven, and that the Christianity Jesus taught and lived is an exact Science, obedience to the rules of which frees mankind from sin and death. This God-inspired Leader, Mrs. Eddy, set forth these rules in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and named her discovery Christian Science.

Mount Vernon, Indiana (First Church).

Lecturer: Frank Bell; introduced by Mrs. Carrie Reister, who said:—

In answer to the question, "How would you define Christian Science?" Mrs. Eddy, its Discoverer and Founder, says, "As the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony" (Rudimental Divine Science, p. 1). Some years ago, when my own health failed, after exhausting all that medical skill had to offer, and failing to obtain healing, I turned to Christian Science. Here I can gratefully acknowledge I found not only physical comfort but also a practical religion, which meets my daily needs physically, morally, and spiritually. Through the study of the Bible in connection with the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I have, like countless thousands, gained an understanding of the Scriptures which has unlocked their treasures and enabled me to demonstrate, to a degree, that "the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations."

Nottingham, England (First Church).

Lecturer: William D. Kilpatrick; introduced by Frederick William Gray, who said:—

Christian Science saved my life over five years ago, when all means of escape from death seemed to have been cut off. Having suffered from internal troubles for several years, I was in continual pain. One doctor pronounced my case incurable even by operation; another doctor failed to give any hope whatever, even of relief. Before this time I had preached against Christian Science, because I had been given to understand it was ungodly; but before I had read many pages of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, I was convinced that my previous knowledge of God had been very limited. My experience was teaching me of the infinite God, good—the God who is Father and Mother, infinite Father, infinite Mother, infinite power, infinite Love. I was realizing also my divine sonship; and with this concept of God and my real self I was healed.
