With overflowing gratitude I wish to relate a healing...
With overflowing gratitude I wish to relate a healing which led me to Christian Science a few years ago, thereby giving me the best and highest that could ever be granted to any person. If my words should aid in strengthening others, who are weary and heavy-laden, on the way to Truth, it would, indeed, make me very happy.
Almost twenty years of my life were ruined by sickness, which brought with it a chain of troubles, despair, and eventually resignation. It was especially on account of so-called Basedow's disease that I sought healing in various hospitals, sanitariums, and health resorts, was treated by a great many physicians, and operated on twice—all, however, without lasting effect. It is true that in the meantime I was able to work for a few years; but I was never really well.
During the last five years that I was ill I had hardly been able to walk, and had to be taken out in an invalid's chair. I spent over two years of this time in a sanitarium, where I was almost entirely confined to my bed. When all the methods of treatment which medical science applies to this disease had been tried in vain, I came across a few Christian Science pamphlets. They did not make much impression on me. I was skeptical, and could not understand how the healings were brought about. But in order to try everything, I wrote to a Christian Science practitioner and asked her if treatment could be considered at all for me, for I lived a long way in the country.
The practitioner very kindly looked me up, brought me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and gave me the first explanations of this wonderful teaching. As I read the book, which reverses all human concepts, after some resistance there fell from my eyes "as it had been scales," and I recognized that it contained the absolute truth concerning the healing of all kinds of sickness. After ten days, in which I had four absent treatments, I was completely healed. My physical strength returned quickly. After a very short time I could walk for hours, and could take up my occupation again.
I immediately felt the absolute certainty that the cause of my sickness was really destroyed and that nothing could ever bring it back again, a security that, naturally, a so-called material method of healing can never give. Since that time I have led an industrious and strenuous life in perfect health. Several other diseases from which I had suffered since childhood disappeared imperceptibly. When I was among people suffering from inflammation of the veins I was tempted a few times to become ill with this disease, which had formerly troubled me very often and very painfully; but with the understanding of Truth I had gained I was able to oppose the adversary and remain untouched.
I have applied Christian Science successfully to many difficulties of daily life, also for other people in a few cases of sickness. Sincerely grateful as I am for my first great healing and for all the blessings which followed, this gratitude is insignificant compared with the profound inward happiness and inexpressible gratitude for having found the truth of Being; the God of love, who is always near us; true, redeeming Christianity; and the possibility of gaining dominion over all the shortcomings of our material life by a spiritualized concept of Life.
The enormous gift Mrs. Eddy has given to the world cannot be valued too highly or gratefully enough. Her wonderful writings are being unlocked more and more. The Bible, which formerly made no impression on me, has, through the spiritual key, become to me a book full of inmost, wonderful life and truth, to which we can conform. I can truthfully say that through Christian Science my life has been completely changed: it has become healthier, more peaceful, happier, more joyous, more spiritual; and I know that it will continue to become more so in ever increasing measure, as is the case with all those who through Christian Science have recognized their true existence. It is wonderful for me to be able to have a part in the great reality of love for the whole world.
I am sincerely grateful to all those who have kindly and lovingly helped me to find the way out of the maze of material concepts and obstructions, and to shake off the selfforged fetters. The periodicals are a great help to me; and I feel sincere gratitude for all the good I have received from the literature distribution committee.
But my most profound gratitude is due to divine Love, which, through Mrs. Eddy, has given us the sublime teaching of Christian Science, and through which all these wonderful works are brought about.—(Miss) Ellen Tornquist, Eschenlohe, near Garmisch, Oberbayern, Germany.
