True Healing

Christian Science has become widely known throughout the world largely because of the healing of disease and sin which it has been instrumental in bringing about. Many in need of healing have heard of the healing of others; and this has often induced them, possibly after they have exhausted material methods, to seek the aid of Christian Science on their own behalf. They, in turn, have become earnest students of the Science of Being, and thus have been healed. It must have been similar in Jesus' time. Many must have come to the Master for healing because they had heard of the healing of others; and certainly he pointed to the "signs and wonders" his spiritual understanding wrought, as proof of the veracity of his teachings.

As it was then, when the great, yet humble Nazarene pilgrimaged on earth, so it is to-day the healings which are taking place through the understanding of God and man which Christian Science gives—the "signs and wonders"—that prove the truth of Christian Science. Referring to this on page 150 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," Mrs. Eddy writes: "Now, as then, signs and wonders are wrought in the metaphysical healing of physical disease; but these signs are only to demonstrate its divine origin,—to attest the reality of the higher mission of the Christ-power to take away the sins of the world."

In the above quotation Mrs. Eddy places her finger exactly on the situation: the metaphysical healing of disease which is taking place in Christian Science practice to-day, testifies to the veracity of the system, proves it to be based on an understanding of the Christ, Truth, and points to the ultimate salvation of all men from every false material concept. The healing of disease is a very important part of the work of the Christian Scientist because of the relief it brings to suffering humanity; but it is by no means the whole of the work. Indeed, a healing of sickness brought about in this way should be but an indication of the beginning of the entire regeneration of the individual; for who that has taken up the study of Christian Science and has perhaps received a speedy healing from what may have been considered a dangerous form of disease, has not felt as if he had touched but the veriest hem of the truth, and that, having had this wonderful proof of Truth's healing power, he must go on with his study in order to feel himself freed from all the erroneous thoughts which tend to inharmony or suffering.

It is not possible to overremphasize the fact that Christian Science aims at the entire regeneration of the individual. Christianity demands this full regeneration; and Christianity affords the true basis of healing. Our Leader says in Science and Health (p. 192), "Christianity is the basis of true healing." And she lays bare the supreme motive of Christianity when she adds, "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power." Christian Science is enabling its followers to receive "directly the divine power," often to a very marked extent. It is revealing God to them as infinite Love; it is showing man to them as the reflection of God, divine Love; and as they strive, in unselfed love, to demonstrate these simple, profound truths, they are liberated from the errors material sense, and are endowed with the spiritual power to heal.

As the striving for full salvation goes on, through steadfast adherence to the truths which Christian Science reveals and patient obedience to the laws of God which it makes known, there is manifested an increasing desire to help those who, like ourselves, have felt the need of healing and regeneration. And with the desire there comes the opportunity; for whosoever possesses in a measure the "unselfed love" to which Mrs. Eddy refers in the words quoted above, in that degree is he lifting up the Christ in his consciousness, and in the same degree is he drawing mankind to the Christ for healing.

What a sense of assurance the genuine student has in the understanding of Christianity which Christian Science gives! With what conviction he can voice the words of the ninetyfirst first psalm, those words which have brought such consolation and peace to unnumbered thousands, "Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come high thy dwelling"! When this assurance and this conviction are in evidence, we can be confident that the student has received, probably in a marked degree, the understanding of Christianity which brings about true healing.
