Love's Smile

There 's the smile that 's above and around us, the smile of God's presence and power,
Which reflected in beauty and goodness, bears token of Love's priceless dower.

There 's the smile of the sun on the water, reflected in dimples and mirth,
In a joyous response to the symbol of Life, Truth, and Love touching earth.

There 's the smile of the flower through the raindrops, where beauty and sweetness full-blown
Are unfolding to those who perceive it — Love's smile, which in beauty we own.

There 's the smile of the wind on the hillside, its movements disclosing to man
Hidden treasures of shrub and bright blossom, that breathe of Love's infinite plan.

There 's the smile of the stone in the brooklet, in tempest or calm, gleaming white,
To reveal to the eye Truth has opened, sweet sense of Love's presence and might.

There 's the smile of the child's pure affection; there Love points the way through its own;
For sweet innocence dwells in His kingdom, where doubt and distrust are unknown.

There 's the smile that brings light to the chamber of sickness, of want, and of woe,
Bearing strength to lift thought out of bondage, and bid all inharmony go.

There 's the smile that subdues opposition, though error's chains seem hard and strong;
For Love's smile gently calls through each trial, whence — cleansed — we emerge with a song.

There 's the smile which, reflected in kindness, lends joy to each task we pursue;
While the cry of the sin-sick and weary responds to the smile that is true.

In Love's presence, Love's smile is reflected in love that exempts man from guile,
Till at last we awake in Love's likeness, all hatred dissolved in Love's smile.
