As a mother, a student of Christian Science, and an earnest reader of the literature, I should like very much to tell of two helpful experiences that have, since I became a student of Christian Science, been guiding posts along the way of life.

One night I was awakened by a terrorizing cough. My little boy, then a mere babe in the crib, was the seeming victim. I leaped out of bed and took Mrs. Eddy's books, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Miscellaneous Writings," "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany," together with the Bible, and began poring over them. First of all, before opening the books, I asked our heavenly Father-Mother God to show me the way, as we are taught to do in Christian Science. Each time I opened one of the books the lines were illumined. One of the first passages I turned to was on pages 149 and 150 of Miscellany: "Remember, thou canst be brought into no condition, be it ever so severe, where Love has not been before thee and where its tender lesson is not awaiting thee. Therefore despair not nor murmur, for that which seeketh to save, to heal, and to deliver, will guide thee, if thou seekest this guidance." This so inspired me with hope that I was enabled to find my lesson in the experience. I then opened Science and Health at page 321, and read the passage under the marginal heading "Fear of the serpent overcome;" and I found that when I cast this rod down it became a serpent, but when wisdom bade me to handle the serpent, I saw through applying the truth that the serpent became a rod, and, the fear being destroyed, this proof was a staff upon which to lean. After this wonderful lesson I was able to go back to bed and go to sleep, knowing that God was the only Mother and Father, and well able to take care of His children if we let Him. The child was instantaneously healed, and coughed no more.

Another experience that has been very helpful was one which seemed to be quite a slow healing. The whole family, consisting of four members, had itch and ringworm. Great patience and the denial of life in matter were needed. The cause of this was a belief of resentment. My little girl was kept out of school for seven weeks; but realizing that evil could not keep her from her proper place, and that God was her only teacher, she was able to make her grade and also learned to apply the truth better. We found that there could be no resentment, and no contagion but good. Our revered Leader tells us in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 228), "Common consent is contagious;" so we learned not to consent to fear, hate, or error of any sort.

A great fear of contagious diseases has been overcome with the understanding that Truth and Love are the only power, and that the true "breaking out" is the breaking out in joy and singing and gratitude to God for the truth which protects us from the belief in evil. My little girl was able to remain in school during a recent so-called epidemic through the realization of the truth just stated, and we saw nothing but the truth manifested.

I am grateful to say that for twenty years it has been my wonderful privilege to have this truth, and that I can give it to our children. I am also grateful for the privilege of teaching in the Christian Science Sunday School, and for learning from the child-thought these simple truths.

Words can never express my heartfelt gratitude for every channel that our dear Leader has provided for all mankind.—(Mrs.)Ruth Hunting Kendall, Detroit, Michigan.
