The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
New York, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Peter V. Ross; introduced by John Beach Tillotson, who said:—
The Psalmist of old wrote, "Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." Christian Scientists know that this saying is as true to-day as when it was uttered some three thousand years ago; for they have been able to prove it in their own experience. Christian Science came to me many years ago in an hour of great trial, when all else had failed me and when I was in a mental state of despair, without hope in life or joy in living. It lifted me out of that condition, and has given me a reason for life and a divine Principle by which to live. For twenty-seven years Christian Science has been my only help in time of physical illness.
Any earnest investigator can find ample proof that Christian Science has healed cases of every disease known to humanity, some of which cases being even those pronounced incurable by physicians. Many persons have been healed simply by reading the textbook of Christian Science, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. If there are any here whose burden of sorrow or suffering seems difficult or hopeless, Christian Science comes to assure you that God is "a very present help in trouble," and that a right understanding of Him will free you from your suffering and show you the way out of your trouble, no matter how severe it may seem to be, bringing you into health and happiness. Minneapolis, Minnesota (Second Church).
Lecturer: Prof. Hermann S. Hering; introduced by Miss Abigail Dyer Thompson, who said:—
The prophet Isaiah, looking out upon suffering humanity and forward to the dawn of a new era, described the coming of the Messiah in these words: "Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall be unstopped. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the dumb sing." This same prophet, looking still farther down the shores of time, exclaimed, "The Lord shall set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people." The healing ministry of the Master and of his immediate followers brought the fulfillment of this first prophecy. The blessings that are coming to the world to-day, through Christian Science, are proving the words of Isaiah, "The Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannot save." Stockport, England (First Church).
Lecturer: William W. Porter; introduced by Daniel S. Lincoln, who said:—
When Mary Baker Eddy placed the words "Christian" and "Science" side by side, she declared to the world that the religion of Christ Jesus was scientific, exact, and demonstrable and that it was necessary to understand it in order to know the truth which should make us free. Her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," teaches that Jesus healed the sick and the sinning by his understanding of God and man, and that he taught his students to heal by cultivating their spiritual understanding, thus conferring upon them power to heal all manner of disease. Spiritual understanding is a wellspring of life to-day, as unnumbered thousands, everywhere, are proving.
Before I took up the study of Christian Science twelve years ago I was becoming subject to recurring attacks of lumbago, and was often using material remedies to combat attacks or to prevent their occurrence. In the first winter of my study I was awakened early one very cold morning by excruciating pain which declared the presence of the old enemy. The study of the Lesson-Sermon was commenced. The first citation from the Bible was the story of the leper coming to Jesus with the plea, "Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean;" and Jesus' reply, "I will; be thou clean." When I realized that the power of God was present to heal me, the trouble disappeared instantaneously; and I was perfectly well, with no convalescence and no need to visit the seaside to recuperate. Best of all, I have had no recurrence of the trouble; for true healing eradicates the cause of so-called disease. It is because Christian Science offers healing in the truest sense that those of us who have responded to its compassionate call find joy in publishing the message of Christian Science to a world so sorely in need of the healing and peace that it brings. Madison, Wisconsin (University of Wisconsin Society).
Lecturer: John J. Flinn; introduced by Harold A. Beeman, who said:—
To-day, as ever, God is omnipotent; and Christian Science is constantly revealing to the world the import of this truth. Man, created in God's image and likeness, is subject to His tender, all-loving care; for, as we read in Acts, "We are also his offspring." We have a never failing source of protection in the all-loving, omnipotent God; and it is only necessary that we realize and accept this truth in order to find the means for relief from every ill. Nor is this a mere assertion. Centuries ago Christ Jesus showed us the way, by healing the sick, relieving the sinning, and raising the dead. To-day, as then, through the understanding he gave to the world, this power of God is demonstrated in its application to mankind by actual, authentic healing of the sick and ministration to all the needs of men. Through the criterion which Jesus left us,—"By their fruits ye shall know them,"—Christian Science is proving itself a true exponent of the practical and positive Christianity taught and demonstrated by Jesus. It is a real and affirmative faith, applicable to the need of every one.
