The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

Birmingham, England (Second Church).

Lecturer: John Randall Dunn; introduced by Mrs. Lily M. Parham, who said:—

Most people will agree that mankind's chief enemy is fear. A story was once told of a man who, thinking that his earthly existence was drawing to a close, called his children round him and said, "I have had a lot of trouble in my life—a lot of trouble, but most of it never happened." This story serves to show that usually the main part of trouble is the fear of it. Yet the Bible tells us: "Fear not," "Be not afraid;" and Paul said, "God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Now, Christian Science teaches us how we can avail ourselves of these three gifts; how we can apply them to the affairs of everyday life, and so begin to solve our problems.

I have cause for deep gratitude to Christian Science. Sixteen years ago I was an invalid, suffering from very serious physical disorders; and after trying everything that the medical world had to offer, found myself, like the woman of whom we read in the Bible, "nothing bettered" but rather growing worse. In a very dark hour I turned to Christian Science, as an experiment and as a last resort, with the result that there was complete and permanent healing.

Minneapolis, Minnesota (Second Church).

Lecturer: Salem A. Hart, Jr.; introduced by Harry C. Goddard, who said:—

Christian Science is the same as the joyous message referred to in the words of Christ Jesus, spoken so long ago, "The kingdom of God is at hand." In other words, the kingdom of heaven or, as Mrs. Eddy defines it in part in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 590), "the reign of harmony," is a present possibility, available to every one. It is the same joyous message which came to Peter, and which, through the vision of the goodness of God as infinite, universal, and available, caused him to say, "Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons." And so to-day Christian Science has come to millions of lives, bringing to them the message of freedom—of freedom from sickness, of freedom from sin, poverty, lack, limitation, and sorrow of all kinds, bringing to them the recognition that Truth and Love can change their consciousness, through the spiritual understanding of God, and lead them into the kingdom of heaven, "the reign of harmony."
