I did not take up the study of Christian Science for...
I did not take up the study of Christian Science for physical healing, but because it appealed to me as being a beautiful and practical religion. And I know that I was led to this church in answer to my prayer for a religion that seemed reasonable.
I knew nothing about Christian Science before my first visit to the church. It is fifteen years since that first visit, and when understandingly applied the truth has met my every need. For months before that time I had never closed my eyes at night without a great desire to find something I did not have. Mrs. Eddy says on page 1 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Desire is prayer; and no loss can occur from trusting God with our desires, that they may be moulded and exalted before they take form in words and in deeds." While I knew nothing of Christian Science then, I did trust God.
Since coming to Christian Science we have had many healings in our home, and have proved several times, when our children have been exposed to contagious diseases, that there is no law which perpetuates contagion. We have turned to "Miscellaneous Writings" by our Leader, and read and studied the article entitled "Contagion" (pp. 228, 229); and I feel that not only our own children but others' have been protected.
A few years ago I had some trouble with my eyes which lasted for several months. I studied and worked faithfully all the while, sometimes almost becoming discouraged. When I would sit down to read the lesson in the Christian Science Quarterly, I would have to have the light shine directly on my books. One morning I sat down to read and the words stood out so clearly and plainly that I was almost surprised, and was surely very grateful; and my eyes have not troubled me since. This healing took place about three years ago.
It would be impossible to tell of all the good that has come to me through the study of Christian Science and of the many healings in our home. Some were instantaneous; others took some time. Our baby at eight months of age was badly burned by upsetting a pot of boiling coffee over him. A practitioner was called. The pain seemed very great for about an hour and a half, when he stopped crying, took some nourishment, and went to sleep and slept quietly for about an hour. Then he woke up and began playing. He went to bed at the usual hour and slept well all night. While it was about three weeks before the wound was entirely healed, he did not suffer any pain after the first day.
Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for all that Christian Science has done for me and for my family. I am grateful for the literature, for membership in The Mother Church, and in a branch church. My daily prayer is to be able to demonstrate more and more of this truth.—(Mrs.) Mucie L. Year, Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
