In 1901 my third baby was born, and to mortal sense...

In 1901 my third baby was born, and to mortal sense both of us had a very hard struggle for life. When he was about a month old a Christian Scientist called on us one day. I told her of the serious time we had had, and she began to talk to me of the truth. I was so sure that I knew the baby was sick that her words made me angry; and she then saw I was not ready for her message of freedom from bondage to material sense, so said no more.

About nine months later I had my trunks at the depot to make a trip East to visit my people when my second eldest boy became suddenly ill with a high fever. I was very much discouraged and knew I could not make the trip with him sick. While I was worrying over the matter, something seemed to tell me to take him across the street to the lady who had called before. This I did, and she lovingly told me that everything would be all right; that perhaps I had been overanxious to make that trip, whether it pleased all concerned or not. She led me into a quiet room and sat in silent prayer for a few minutes and then told me to take the boy home, give him his bath, and put him to bed, and then go to bed myself and get my rest, as I would need it to make the journey with those three who were almost babies. I obeyed her command entirely and just left the child in God's care. The healing was instantaneous. I made my trip, and all went well. I realized in a measure that it was the power of God that did the work; but, like many others, before coming into Christian Science I did not know God aright.

Time went on until June, 1903. I had been in very poor health for four months, unable most of the time to remain on my feet for more than a few minutes at a time. I was nauseated constantly, had bad spells with my heart, and varicose veins bothered me until I was so discouraged I did not know what to do. Our doctor offered me no relief, so once again I thought of the lady who had helped me out of my trouble so quickly before. I wrote to her and told her my troubles. She immediately took up work for me in Christian Science, and I as quickly reaped the benefit. I was not sick another hour from the time she received my letter. Then, as before, I felt that God had healed me; but as I did not have a Bible in my home, I could not read and study the beautiful ninety-first psalm this lady told me about, nor did I buy the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.

Then I thought no more about Christian Science until 1918, when my husband was taken ill. At that time we were living in furnished apartments. We called in a doctor, but he gave him no relief. His kidneys were in a very bad condition, also his lungs, and I felt as if he might die of consumption. One day when he was very ill, our landlady came to the door and asked us if we knew anything about Christian Science. I told her of my past experiences, and she said if we wanted to try it we might have her textbook to read. My husband said he was ready to try anything which would bring relief. So she gave us the Christian Science textbook and I began to read to him about four o'clock on Saturday afternoon, understanding in a measure something of the truths contained therein.

Our landlady had told us we must destroy the medicine we were using if we were to have Science treatment, and offered to help us locate a practitioner; but she also said hundreds of people were healed just through reading Mrs. Eddy's writings, so we decided to try reading first. After reading only a short time I knew we had found the right thing, and my past experiences gave me absolute faith that all things were possible to God. I emptied out all the medicine we had that night, and my husband ate a good supper and slept well for the first time since he became ill. We continued reading and trusting; and the following Tuesday he got up and came to the dinner table and never went to bed again to stay. In three weeks he took a job in the mountains, where he shoveled rock on a crusher twelve hours a day at an altitude of nearly nine thousand feet. This proved that his healing was complete; and it has remained so. Since that time we have relied on nothing but Christian Science for our every need, and it has never failed when rightly applied. We have learned that God is the source of all true supply.

While studying Christian Science I have been healed of many discordant conditions. I am so grateful to our revered Leader for her great work and for all the good it has brought to me and mine, and is bringing to the world. I have mentioned the length of time since my first healings up to the time of my beginning to study and apply Christian Science, to show that we have had to work out our own salvation. I could no more go back to the old way than I could wear dresses which I wore when a child. I am indeed grateful for Christian Science.

With love and gratitude I wish to verify my wife's testimony in regard to my healing; and I can truthfully say the healing has been permanent. I am also grateful for all that Christian Science has done for me and is doing for mankind.
