Understanding God's Law

On page 172 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy writes: "That which is termed 'natural science,' the evidences whereof are taken in by the five personal senses, presents but a finite, feeble sense of the infinite law of God; which law is written on the heart, received through the affections, spiritually understood, and demonstrated in our lives." The great problem that confronts humanity is how to live in conformity with God's law. The ceaseless struggle to meet the constant demands of material existence, engendering factions and strife of every kind, the unavailing striving in many cases for health, happiness, and harmony—all are caused by lack of the knowledge of the true source of all, God, the divine Principle, and of His law.

Our Master said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." The Christ, Truth, brought to us by Jesus of Nazareth and in this present age by Mary Baker Eddy, will alone satisfy the longing within each of us for something more than what human existence offers, for that which will meet the constant daily demands, and will satisfy the higher aspirations, the deeper affections, even the longing for the eternal and indestructible.

In the grand verity that life emanates from God alone, from infinite good, and that this infinite good can be brought into our daily experience, lies the salvation of mankind. This truth is the law of Life. And in the proportion that we claim it and lose our belief that life is in or of matter, it increases longevity, eliminates fear, and brings an ever increasing sense of the fuller joys and harmonies that constitute life in Spirit, God. This truth is even now unfolding to humanity a broader outlook, permeating the consciousness with higher ideals, purer motives. aspirations, and desires.

On page 72 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mrs. Eddy declares that "divine law is the communicator of truth, health, and harmony to earth and humanity." All suffering, depletion, limitation, sin, sickness, and death—all that is not good—result from believing what is not true about God and man. The spiritual fact that man eternally reflects God, and that therefore all good is really his now, is the sovereign panacea for every ill that besets mankind. The understanding of this spiritual fact must be gained by patient, persistent effort; and as it is assimilated, we shall find mankind expressing health instead of sickness, happiness instead of sorrow, abundance in place of limitation and lack, divine strength and activity instead of weakness, eternal and indestructible life instead of death.

It is the privilege, therefore, of each one to understand his true relationship to God, and through this knowledge to gain dominion over all sick and sinful beliefs. For in this way he will help his neighbor and aid in the coming of universal good, the kingdom of heaven, to earth. In Psalms we read, "Thy law is the truth." The Bible tells us that God is Love; and through the simple yet profound teaching of Christian Science we are learning the true nature of Love. Christian Science is teaching us that Love is not mere human emotion; that it includes the infinite qualities and capacities of the one infinite Mind, God.

It should be the aim of each sincere student to entertain in consciousness the spiritual qualities which pertain to divine Love, and to allow these to actuate his every thought and action, instead of the human impulses of envy, jealousy, hate, criticism, and selfishness in all their supposititious forms. In the proportion that one finds himself able to do this will harmony pervade his activities and unity and cooperation characterize his dealings with his fellow-men. In this way, through striving, through scientific right thinking, and through the effort in our daily life to emulate the spirit of the Master, each of us will be enabled to prove constantly that "love is the fulfilling of the law."

It is possible, therefore, by earnestly studying the Bible and the inspired writings of our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, to understand the true nature and characteristics of God's law, its omnipresence and its availability to meet all the needs of humanity. God's law is all-inclusive; and through diligent application and unceasing watchfulness it will be found to enter into the minutest details of our daily experience, transforming, uplifting, healing, and blessing all mankind, enabling all to prove its omniscience and its omnipotence. As we are obedient to the demands of spiritual law, as we become conscious of the blessings flowing from this obedience, we shall understand somewhat the meaning of the Psalmist's words: "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day."
