The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Port Arthur, Ontario, Canada (First Church). Lecturer: Rev. Andrew J. Graham; introduced by Marshall M. Vance, who said:—
Persons approach the study of Christian Science for different reasons. Many are attracted by the bodily and mental healing it offers; others, finding no spiritual uplift in the socalled orthodox faiths, turn to Christian Science; still others have their own reasons. In my own case, when I married, my wife and her family had been deeply interested in this study for some twelve to fifteen years. I had no preconceived antipathy to Christian Science, but I was a skeptic concerning its value. I had to be shown. I have been shown. I have witnessed many physical healings, the latest having recently taken place. Our young daughter awoke one morning with all the outward manifestations of a severe cold. Christian Science work was taken up, and by evening all symptoms had disappeared. Christian healing is not a new thing, populr opinion notwithstanding. It is many centuries old; and the greatest practitioner of it was Christ Jesus. About three centuries after his time this knowledge was lost, and it remained for Mary Baker Eddy to rediscover it shortly after the middle of the last century.
Fallon, Nevada (Society).
Lecturer: W. Stuart Booth; introduced by Frank Joseph Scholz, who said:—
Christian Science is a religion of love, based upon the fundamental teachings of Christ Jesus. It is through the spiritual understanding of what he did that Christians to-day are healing the sick and sinning. On the first page of "Rudimental Divine Science," a book written by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, we find Christian Science defined as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony." The first healing by Christian Science brought to my attention was that of a small boy who had been healed of a rupture. At that time our little girl, who was then six months old, was sick. The doctors being unable to cure her, we were advised to try Christian Science. This we did, with the result that we still rely on it for our help in trouble.
Chicago, Illinois (Sixteenth Church). Lecturer: William D. Kilpatrick; introduced by George W. Stuck, who said:—
Every Christian Scientist who has benefited through the healing ministration of Christian Science has a reason for the hope that is within him. In my case its healing efficacy was first brought to my attention about seventeen years ago, at a time when I was in great need of physical healing. After laying aside considerable prejudice I was eventually prevailed upon to read the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I was healed of this prejudice by the reading of the first sentence of the Preface: "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings." I continued to study with an open mind and a desire to understand; and before I had read the book through the first time, I was healed of a severe trouble that had been diagnosed as appendicitis. This experience encouraged me to continue the study, and with the aid of a practitioner my other troubles, among which were chornic indigestion, constipation, severe nervousness, and the tobacco habit, one by one dropped away. In subsequent years Christian Science has been my only physician, meeting my every need when correctly applied, overcoming hay fever and asthma, double pneumonia, smallpox, and what appeared to be very severe heart trouble, with many minor ailments.
We who have experienced these or similar physical healings are indeed most grateful; but far more grateful are we for the correct concept of God, as well as of man in His likeness, that Christian Science brings to us. And it is through the correct teaching of God and man that it is healing mankind throughout the world, and fast taking its rightful place as a world power in this redemptive work.
