The Lectures
Introductions to Lectures
Perth, Western Australia (First Church).
Lecturer: Algernon Hervey Bathurst; introduced by John Thompson Ferry, who said:—
In the Bible we read that Christ Jesus left this message: "He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;" and Mrs. Eddy has stated in her text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 55): "This Comforter I understand to be Divine Science." Christian Science has indeed been the Comforter to me. By its means I have been enabled to understand somewhat the power of Truth, and for years it has been my only physician. I have been healed of failing eyesight by Christian Science. A serious condition was manifested, making it impossible for me to do my work. Yet that is not all. Christian Science is a practical everyday religion, universal in its adaptation; and I find it invaluable in business, because it gives us a sure foundation upon which to work. Jesus said, "Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." And this is just a little of what Christian Science will do for all.
Alamosa, Colorado (First Church).
Lecturer: W. Stuart Booth; introduced by Judge Elias Hamilton Ellithorp, who said:—
What is Christian Science? How does it heal sickness and disease? are questions that are being asked all over the civilized world to-day. Christian Science is the practical Christianity taught and demonstrated by Christ Jesus nineteen centuries ago, the basis of which is the fact that there is but one creator and one creation, one cause and one effect.
Students of Christian Science take the Bible for their guide; and in the first chapter of Genesis we are told that God created everything, including man, and that God created man in His image and likeness. "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." If, then, God is the only creator and all that He made is good; and if man is created in the image and likeness of God, surely these mortal bodies are not that image and likenss. Jesus said, "God is a Spirit." Christian Scientists believe that; and they also understand that man as the image and likeness of God is spiritual—not material. They likewise believe that God rules and governs His entire creation, including man. This is the Science of being, the understanding of which heals all manner of sickness and sin now, just as it did in Jesus' time. Jesus the Christ provided a way of escape from every ill, from trouble of every sort. It was he who said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
We do not need to await the change called death to find peace and heaven. An understanding of this truth about God and His creation brings peace, health, heaven—all good—into our experieince here and now. As a writer has said:
"Wherever truth abides,
Sweet peace is ever there;
If we but love and serve the Lord,
Our heaven is everywhere."
Geneva, Switzerland (First Church).
Lecturer: Miss Lucia C. Coulson; introduced by Miss Retta Patterson, who said:—
Christian Science has come to save the world. Not since the days of Christ Jesus has a message of so great import come to mankind. It has come to teach us to see our neighbor as God sees him, harmonious and perfect, and to say of our neighbor only what can be said of the child of God. Christian Science teaches us how to eliminate fear, by showing that all fear is absolutely false, and has not the slightest basis to stand on. We also learn in Christian Science to know that there is but one law,—God's law,—and that this law is always protecting us. Christian Science gives us the spiritual comprehension by which to grasp the true meaning of the Bible, which to many had been like a sealed book. The quest of the human heart has ever been after higher things; yet we have always been in the presence of Truth, but have not recognized it. We have sought without finding. Christian Scientists know that they have found the living God, and that the proof of His omnipotence and omnipresence has been realized through demonstrations which have brought them better health, purer lives, spiritual happiness and peace.
Halifax, England (First Church).
Lecturer: Paul Stark Seeley; introduced by Mrs. Olive Swift, who said:—
The membership of a Christian Science church is very different from that of other churches, because in almost every instance the membership has followed some healing through the ministrations of Christian Science, either in the member himself or in one near and dear to him. I myself was healed ten years ago of a serious nervous breadown and of insomnia, after a highly respected physician of this town had failed to give me any relief. Since those healings, I have enjoyed better health and greater happiness than had ever been my lot before; and Christian Science is teaching me how to maintain these great blessings, and to show others how they too may obtain them.
Rochester, New York (First Church).
Lecturer: Hon. William E. Brown; introduced by Willis Reed Burdick, who said:—
It has been proved in my experience that Christian Science is the truth about God, man, and the universe. After years of illness and inability to work, during which I suffered with what many of the best medical doctors diagnosed as incurable organic disease, a loved one endeavored to tell me of Christian Science; but my antagonism toward what in my ignorance I believed it to be prevented me from listening. More years of suffering passed. A serious difficulty of the eyes had been added to my many other troubles. Confined to my bed, able to see but little and at times not at all, I finally became willing to ask for help in Christian Science. With a heart full of love and gratitude to God, I wish to state that I received my healing.
Courtland, California (Society).
Lecturer: Dr. Walton Hubbard; introduced by Ralph M. Dewing, who said:—
I shall never cease to be grateful that Christian Science came into our home three years ago, transforming it from a miniature hospital into a temple of rejoicing. At that time my wife, who had been an invalid for ten years, and had undergone eight surgical operations and feared another, turned to God for help and was healed. I had no intention of taking up Christian Science myself, but my wife would bring me the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and ask my help my certain of the passages she had read. I found that in order to explain any of the book, I had first to read it. Once the book was open I could not close it; and while reading it I was instantaneously healed of eye trouble of long standing. I was also healed of so-called hereditary stomach trouble, debilitating night sweats, malaria, and displaced vertebrae, the result of a fall. While I am deeply grateful for the physical healings experienced I am more grateful that I have found the Christ, Truth, which is to me ever present, instantly available, affording a practical solution of my daily, hourly problems.
