Because it is a privilege, and because I have received so...

Because it is a privilege, and because I have received so much benefit from the testimonies of others and hope the telling of some of my own experiences may help to encourage another, I desire to bear witness to the fact that Christian Science does heal the so-called helpless, hopeless sick.

I received my first healing many years ago, after eight years of bondage to what were pronounced incurable conditions, and after several of our best physicians had put forth their faithful, but unavailing efforts on my behalf. This healing was permanent, and resulted in my acceptance of the teachings of Christian Science, as set forth in our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and in the other writings of that noble Christian woman, Mary Baker Eddy,—she whom all sincere Christian Scientists delight to acknowledge as their revered Leader.

Then followed years of joyful study, class instruction, and rich church experiences in both The Mother Church and a branch church, as well as opportunities of helping others. Later on there came a testing time. It seemed that the work previously done was to be tried as by fire.

A fall caused an injury to the ankle joint, ligaments being torn loose and a bone broken. Work in Science seemed at first to take care of the case, and I went about my daily duties with little inconvenience for several days. Then ugly symptoms began to appear, and to persist in spite of the faithful work of a practitioner. Weeks ran on into months, bringing a condition of seeming helplessness. At this point a member of the family insisted upon an X-ray examination. The surgeon said amputation was all, in his line, that could avail, as necrosis of the bone was rapidly progressing, at the same time pressing his finger into the bone to show its decayed condition. Much effort was made to persuade me to go to a sanitarium, but I decided that sufficient concession to mortal mind's demands had already been made, so refused anything further in that line. Finally I audibly declared that if mortal sense wanted to pass on, well and good; but that I should not follow. I should continue to live in Mind, where I had always lived; that I did not fear anything that matter claimed to be able ot do to me. When gales of discouragement threatened my bark of faith, always there was an inner voice saying: Stand fast now! Love is at the helm. You know God cares. Lean hard if you must, but fear not!

So one practitioner and then another stood faithfully by with unflinching, courageous work; and the haven of healing was finally reached. Surely only those who have weathered a similar passage over the sea of false, suffering sense, can fully realize the heaven of this port. The restoration of the ankle joint, foot, and limb was perfect, with no least lameness remaining, and has so continued through the succeeding years.

As we humanly reckon, it seemed a long and, at times, a desperate struggle; but the result has been of far greater moment than a mere physical healing. Many valuable lessons were learned along the way; much self-correction was achieved. Spiritual sense has been quickened, fear lessened, and love increased. And in addition, there has resulted such a positive, deep conviction of the efficiency and sufficiency of God's spiritual law, as understood and applied in Christian Science, to meet mankind's every need, as to preclude all doubt and fear for the future weal of self or the human race.

I feel utterly unable to make known my unspeakable gratitude to God for the revelation and demonstration of Christian Science among men, here and now; for all the faithful workers in His vineyard, who have loved, prayed, and proved their faith by their works in helping to bless mankind. I am most grateful for the privilege of participating in the activities of our organization as authorized by the Church Manual, and for the great good accruing to the world through Truth demonstrated.
