About thirteen years ago I heard this statement: "Christian Scientists worship Mary Baker Eddy." When, a few months later, I had an opportunity to investigate Christian Science, I eagerly grasped it, partly to satisfy the curiosity aroused by the above remark, and partly because I had been distinctly helped by a Scientist a few days before.
The worship of an American woman! I wished to know something about such a religion. Then this dear one who had helped me provided me with a copy of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had read very little before I realized how impossible it would be for any one who was correctly informed as to what Christian Science really teaches, to worship Mrs. Eddy, its Discoverer and Founder; and I have joined the many, many thousands who love and revere her for having given them the correct understanding of God and His universe, including man in His image and likeness. She has illumined the Bible and brought to the attention of a thinking world truths that seemingly had been hidden therein until her hand drew aside the veil of material interpretation which had obscured its spiritual teachings. And so, for the life and works of Mrs. Eddy I give grateful thanks to God, the God I have learned to love because she awakened me to know Him as Life, Truth, and Love, altogether lovable.
Christian Science is teaching me how to keep the two greatest commandments, as given in the twelfth chapter of Mark. The result of my efforts to keep them is expressed in health, happiness, and a constantly increasing sense of love, patience, justice, compassion, and dominion over the various phases of evil.
Instead of God's permitting sin, disease, and death, I have learned that His law, the law of eternal life, destroys them; therefore I no longer suffer with my spine as I had suffered ever since I could remember, nor with fallen arches, weak ankles, quinsy sore throat, headaches, car sickness, with my kidneys and my heart, with nervousness and insomnia. Nor do I need a mechanical support for another ailment. These healings were realized after about three months' study of the Christian Science textbook together with the Bible and the Bible Lession, as given in the Christian Science Quarterly.
I have experienced painless dentistry, and the instantaneous healing, at one time, of a bee sting and, at another time, of the sting of a wasp. On another occasion a rusty pin went entirely through one finger. I did not feel any pain, nor did the finger bleed. A broken bone in my hand was also quickly and painlessly healed, the hand being used as usual. I was healed of the fear of being alone after dark. A small lump on my wrist and one behind my ear were removed; and another, which later formed on my eyelid, was permanently healed after about two years' work in Science. With the help of a loving practitioner I was healed of pyorrhea in two weeks. Since learning to seek "first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness," I have found "all these things," in the way of material needs, most bountifully supplied. Hate has given place to love, fear to trust, doubt of God to the certainty of His presence, power, and availability, and the knowledge that good alone is man's heritage.
I welcome each piece of the authorized Christian Science literature as it reaches me, for there also I find food and drink. Truly God Himself led our beloved Leader to establish these channels of truth, from which the spiritually thirsty throughout the world may receive the needed cup of cold water. I am grateful also for our divinely inspired Manual of The Mother Church. I find that as I comprehend and willingly and lovingly obey its By-laws, I am alert to detect the false claims of evil to power and presence, and more instant in realization of the truth which destroys such erroneous claims.
I cannot close without expressing the love gratitude I feel for the dear friend who first brought this truth to me and guided my first feeble footsteps along the way, and to every other devoted Scientist who has helped to make possible the joy that I feel.
