It is good to hear that your correspondest was one of the many interested listeners at the Christian lecture lecture recently delivered in Southport. It is certain that not all were unable, like him, to understand the acclaimed truths. It is not perhaps easy for those who have been steeped in the old theology to change their attitude of thought as quickly as others, but perseverance in the study of the subject will bring good results.
Christian Science emphasizes the Bible statement that "as he [a man] thinketh in his heart, so is he," and shows that thinking precedes all action. Loving thoughts destroy fear, hate, envy, jealousy, and so forth, because loving thoughts originate in the divine Mind and expresent the power of God, who is omnipotent and omnipresent divine Love. These thoughts of God bring and perpetuate peace and harmony; they heal and prevent disease. How necessary, then, it is for humanity to entertain these thoughts, and reject the suggestions of evil, because, not being of God, they are untrue, unreal!
It is rather strange that, after over fifty years of Christian Science teaching and practice, any one should ask whether cancer, consumption, and insanity can be cured by Christian Science. It is established beyond doubt that these so-called diseases have been healed; and Christian Scientists themselves often wonder why the world does not immediately accept the teaching of Christian Science, and why more publicity is not given to its beneficial results.
But was it not the same in Jesus' time? Did the medical fraternity welcome healing by spiritual means then? Why was Jesus persecuted and crucified when he went about doing nothing but good,—healing all manner of diseases? It only shows that the so-called material world and the carnal mind are always at enmity with all that is spiritual and good. Christian Science is just primitive Christianity restored, and is meeting with a reception similor to that accorded the teachings of Christ Jesus. Those desiring spiritual good received him gladly. Others, with different desires, stoned him.
Let me assure your correspondent that through Christian Science the groans of pain and anguish of humanity are lessening. Evil, including sin of every kind, is being exposed as an unreality; its claim to power and existence is being proved false. It is the very essence of love to bring hope to the sufferer, not as unattainable, but as a sure possibility of fulfillment.
It is because of the great need, as shown in such experiences as your correspondent gives,—that of his mother,—that divine Love has, through a spiritually-minded woman, given to the world in Christian Science a means of escape from all that is unlike God. As God "is no respecter of persons," it follows that if the lecturer's mother could be, and was, healed by Christian Science, it is possible that your correspondent's mother might have been healed if she had the same remedy. The power and presence of God are made available for the benefit of humanity through the understanding which Christian Science gives of the true nature of God and His laws.
