In reviewing the past few years, I recall the words from...
In reviewing the past few years, I recall the words from the book of Daniel, "Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard." From the day that I commenced the serious study of Christian Science, about fifteen years ago, there has been a steady progress in thought, and consequently in outward conditions; and it has thus been proved to me that from the day we wholeheartedly turn to God, our salvation or healing begins.
When Christian Science was offered to me I was in poor circumstances, discontented because it seemed such an unjust world, and envious of those in better conditions. From the first, my efforts to follow the teachings of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, were persistent; and although my affirmations of Truth and denials of error were feeble, and made with but little understanding, yet my business prospects and home conditions began at once to improve; and that improvement continued until the day came when I was able to find all the employment needed.
During the great war there seemed to be a check to this progress, as I was sent to France for nearly two years. The need, however, was met; and my business, in a prosperous condition, was handed back to me on my return. While I was in France several moves took place; but in each case, through my holding persistently to the truth as declared in the twenty-third psalm, the move was to an improved position; also, during this period wonderful protection was experienced.
I gratefully acknowledge the health Christian Science confers and preserves. Before knowing of this Science I used to spend at least one week in bed annually with influenza or bronchitis, which was generally followed by a period of convalescence. I am glad to state that since then there has never been even half a day spent in bed through sickness, and no absence from business. This does not mean that attacks of sickness have not come, but that all have been overcome by Christian Science without the necessity of staying away from my work.
Perhaps the most remarkable physical healing experienced was the overcoming of neurasthenia. For a time the trouble was pretty desperate and the struggle severe, but the victory was finally won with the unselfed, loving help of friends, practitioners, and a teacher of Christian Science, to whom I can never be sufficiently grateful. One great step in the healing came through an editorial in the Christian Science Sentinel in which these words of Mrs. Eddy, quoted from "No and Yes" (p. 20), "In divine Science, God is recognized as the only power, presence, and glory," had a truly remarkable effect, sending me out in one hour with a transformed thought and new strength.
Students of Christian Science are sometimes discouraged by the attacks of evil or error; but when we realize that these can be overcome if only we are faithful, they serve us by revealing the weak spots in our mentality, in order that these may be eliminated by the Christ, Truth. Although well aware that many such errors in my thought are yet to be corrected, still I am now confident that all will disappear in proportion to my growth in the understanding of Truth.
I daily thank God for the Bible, for Mrs. Eddy's writings, for the life of Jesus, for Mrs. Eddy, and for all those through whom good has come to me and is flowing to all mankind. I also highly appreciate the wonderful activities of The Christian Science Publishing Society, which is helping the world so remarkably by obeying Mrs. Eddy's injunction "to pour in truth through flood-tides of Love" (Science and Health, p. 201). I joyfully recognize that, largely through the activities of the Christian Science church and its organization, "the Sun of righteousness" is rising "with healing in his wings," and that this rising cannot be stayed, but will go on to the perfect day.
I am most grateful for the privilege of membership in The Mother Church and a local branch church.—Horace G. Laddiman, Norwich, Norfolk, England.
