It was in 1906, in my mother-in-law's house, that I first heard of Christian Science. I was seeking for the truth, and while looking into the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, all I read seemed so wonderful to me that I ordered a copy at once. However, when the book arrived, I seemed to have no time to read it, so I put it on the bookshelf ; but when my summer visitors came I invited them to read this interesting book.
Half a year later, when sitting by the fireside longing for something worth reading, I remembered my copy of Science and Health; so, thinking I would investigate its contents more thoroughly, I began to read it. I became so interested that I could hardly lay the book aside. I found all it contained natural and beautiful, and I accepted all as the truth; so much so, that I said to myself that now I could never become ill! After a while came the test. To my astonishment I caught the mumps. However, by reading the textbook as much as I could, I soon made my first demonstration, and was healed.
At this time my husband was very indifferent to what I told him about Christian Science, but he left me free to do as I liked; so, after some years, I joined the Christian Science church at The Hague and went to London for class instruction, which were both of great help to me. For thirteen years I was the only Scientist in the place where we lived; and I shall never forget the comfort I gained from the LessonSermons and our Christian Science periodicals. In all those years I never took a drop of medicine, nor stayed a day in bed, though I sometimes asked the help of a Christian Science practitioner and received treatment for some ailments which yielded slowly to the touch of Truth.
One day my husband asked me for some Christian Science literature, and, to my great surprise and joy, also for treatment. He grasped the truth quickly, and now we work together for the same Cause. Two years ago we moved to Arnhem and joined the Christian Science Society there; and for the first time after seventeen years of study, I became an active member. Lately my husband has also become a member of The Mother Church.
My heart goes out in loving gratitude to God, the only Wise; to Christ Jesus, our Way-shower; and to our revered Leader, Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I also wish to express my loyalty to the Board of Directors of The Mother Church. I hope always to remain strictly obedient to the Church Manual.—(Mrs.) Margaretha C. Eekhout, Velp nr. Arnhem, Holland.
It was in 1919 that I became very ill, and I considered the illness so serious that I could not trust the case to my family doctor. Remembering that there had been remarkable healings through Christian Science, I asked my wife, who had been interested in Science for many years, for help, and resolved to give Christian Science a trial for eight days. If there was no improvement in that time, it was my intention to consult a specialist. In those eight days I read Science and Health and several pamphlets on Christian Science. I did not understand Science and Health, but felt the power of the thought; and, as my health decidedly improved, I resolved to continue the study. With my wife's help I was completely healed of the illness in three weeks. In those three weeks I had read Science and Health three times right through, and had begun to grasp something of the truth it contained. Since 1914, I had suffered much from inflammation of the eyes. I was treated for many years by an oculist without any success. So I went to a professor in The Hague; but, though I followed his advice strictly, I did not get any help from his medicaments either. After about three months' study of Christian Science the inflammation disappeared, never to return. I had also suffered from eczema, and the many physicians consulted were not able to set me free from this illness; but the trouble left me about the same time as the inflammation of the eyes. Having received so many blessings through Christian Science in three months, I was convinced of its truth, and resolved to continue the study. At that time I was a member of the French Protestant Church and one of its board of directors. I gave up my membership; for I felt I could not do otherwise, as the truth of Christian Science became more and more' clear to me. I shall always remember with gratitude the friendship, help, and kindness I received from the clergyman and members of that church.
My education in Christian Science had begun. All my life changed. The Bible—to me before a dull, incomprehensible book—became, with the writings of Mrs. Eddy and the periodicals published by The Christian Science Publishing Society, my best friend, with whom I loved to spend many hours a day. I joined the Christian Science Society in Arnhem, had the privilege of receiving class instruction in London, and became a member of The Mother Church.
The spiritual regeneration and uplift which I have experienced as a result of the study of Christian Science have been worth more to me than the release from physical ills. Higher thoughts of what is manly, honest, right, and pure are the results of this study. I never was happier than now. I never loved and did my work better than now. My gratitude to God, to Christ Jesus, and to our Leader I hope to show by right daily living. Especially I wish to thank The Christian Science Publishing Society for the good news they are spreading over the whole world.—(Lieut. Col.) Dirk A. Eekhout, Velp nr. Arnhem, Holland.
