The Lectures

Florence, Italy (Second Church).—Introducing Algernon Hervey Bathurst, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Miss Mary Talbot Morrison said in part:—

Centuries ago a tiny babe lay in a manger in Bethlehem; and on that night the three Chaldean Wisemen saw in the Eastern heavens a new and brillian star, which to them was a sign promising a higher destiny. Awed by this appearing they followed its light, "and, lo, the star ... went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was." To-day this star which led the Wisemen to find and worship the Christ, Truth, humanly heralded by the Bethlehem child, is pointing the way for us all to health, happiness, and harmony. This way, illumined by the daystar of Christian Science, is a way of practical attainment; and it will bring practical results. It will heal the world of all strife and discord and reveal the brotherhood of man. On page 232 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy says: "This age is reaching out towards the perfect Principle of things; is pushing towards perfection in art, invention, and manufacture. Why, then, should religion be stereotyped, and we not obtain a more perfect and practical Christianity?" Practical Christianity is indeed our need; and we shall find this need supplied, if we but obediently and lovingly follow the star in the east.

Medford, Mass. (First Church).—Introducing Miss Margaret Murney Glenn, a Christian Science lecturer, to her audience, William Frye White said in part:—

In the first chapter of Genesis we read an account of a completed creation, which God beheld as "very good." In the second chapter we are told that a mist went up from the earth. Mists always obscure and distort, and this first mist was no exception to the rule. It obscured and distorted men's view of the perfect creation of the first chapter of Genesis; and the man created in God's image and likeness, male and female, has through this mist appeared to mankind to be two individuals, one a man and the other a woman. Mrs. Eddy in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," makes it perfectly clear that there has always been but one creation; and that one the perfect spiritual creation of the first chapter of Genesis; that the man of that creation was indeed male and female, the image and likeness of the Father-Mother God, and therefore expressing and manifesting all of His qualities,—His infinite intelligence, strength, power, courage, justice, gentleness, mercy, patience, and love.

Save the Master himself no one has ever so completely illustrated this union of the God-qualities as did Mary Baker Eddy. Wisdom, strength, courage, justice, mercy, patience, and love were astoundingly manifested in her. Knowing the real man as she did, it is not strange that in her church she left the door wide open for woman to take her place beside man in any and every activity.

Council Bluffs, Ia. (First Church).—The following remarks were made by James F. Holst prefatory to a Christian Science lecture by John J. Flinn:—

As a result of the study of Christian Science mankind is beginning to reject the testimony of the physical senses as to material cause and effect, and is turning to God, Spirit, Soul, as the only cause and creator. I turned to God in the hour of my greatest need. In searching for healing from physical pain and suffering, surrounded by the dark clouds of doubt and fear, faced with the thoughts of possible blindness, I opened the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and read there on the first page this wonderful statement: "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." I shall never forget the peace and joy that came to me when reading that statement. I was healed when reading the Christian Science textbook.

Salem, Ore. (First Church).—Mrs. Elizabeth Jaeger made the following remarks when introducing Ezra W. Palmer, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience:—

On page 224 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, we read these words: "A higher and more practical Christianity, demonstrating justice and meeting the needs of mortals in sickness and in health, stands at the door of this age, knocking for admission." Eighteen years ago I opened the door of my consciousness to this knocking, and was healed of one of the most dreaded diseases. Christian Science can heal every disease and solve all the world's problems.

San Juan, Porto Rico (Society).—The following remarks were made by Judge Harvey M. Hutchinson introducing George Shaw Cook, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience:—

The history of human achievement records the results of such knowledge as has come to mankind through the mental perception and spiritual vision of the individual. Without an intelligent faith in a rational, working hypothesis, the story would not have been written. The open mind receives the light because it is open to the light. The invisible forces that govern the universe cannot be expressed in terms of avoirdupois, horse power, candle power, wave length, or kilowatts. The golden grain of metaphysics cannot be measured in the brass-bound half bushel of material sense. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

Christian Science, if accepted, brings the basic truth of the Bible out of the past and out of Palestine into the here and now of daily experience. Christian Scientists are law students; and, to the extent of their knowledge, practitioners, actively engaged in the practice of spiritual law. In so far as they succeed in bringing themselves within the rules prescribed by that law they become entitled to and therefore obtain freedom from all the ills of the flesh, physical, financial, mental, and moral.

Liverpool, England (Second Church).—Introducing Prof. Hermann S. Hering, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Mrs. Sarah Ellen Jones spoke as follows:—

The two most precious books in the world to a Christian Scientist are the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy,—the Bible because it is the guide to health, happiness, and eternal life; Science and Health because it is what its name implies, a "Key to the Scriptures;" and through its teachings we are enabled to make the Bible truths everyday possibilities, and not only to lead better, happier lives ourselves but to help others to do the same. Christian Science is the religion taught by Jesus of Nazareth on the shores of Galilee nearly two thousand years ago, and by which he healed the sick, cleansed the leper, and raised the dead.

Several years ago I came to a realization of this divine Truth and Love through the healing of a relative, which proved to me that the truth which Christian Science teaches does heal, and without material methods. Since that time I have daily experienced that this loving gift of an all-wise God brings health, joy, and peace through the better understanding of God as taught in Christian Science.

Memphis, Tenn. (Second Church).—Introducing William W. Porter to his audience, Mrs. Emily B. Frayser spoke as follows:—

The world to-day, perhaps more intelligently than ever before, is searching for something higher and more nearly the truth than it has possessed before; and this great need is a spiritual concept of God. A defined, clarified, spiritual concept reveals the true relation of God and man. Through the spiritual understanding as given by Mary Baker Eddy in the revelation of Christian Science we reach a new concept of God.

St. Paul, Minn. (First Church).—Introducing Frank Bell, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Charles J. Andre said in part:—

Christian Science relates to spiritual laws and forces, and these cannot be understood or apprehended through the physical senses. Paul made this clear when he said, "The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." Christian Science denies the existence of matter. Its province is apart from matter in the realm of the spiritual. Its appeal is not to the physical senses but to spiritual perception. It can be discerned only spiritually.
