The Lectures

Saginaw, Mich. (First Church).—Mrs. Amy Weathers made the following prefatory remarks at a Christian Science lecture by Ezra W. Palmer:—

Centuries ago Cicero made the statement, "In a disturbed mind, as in a body in the same state, health cannot exist." Events in history prove that the human consciousness, even when actuated by its highest idea of right, is not reliable: humanity must look above and beyond itself. Jesus the Christ demonstrated an infallible rule, later referred to by the Apostle James when he said, "If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well." In this age this rule has been reduced, in Christian Science, to a scientific understanding, which enables each individual to govern his consciousness and actions aright.

El Reno, Okla. (First Church).—Introducing Geo. Shaw Cook, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Mrs. Effie T. Snodgrass said in part:—

Testimonies of healing in Christian Science often prove an oasis in the desert of human existence; but all who have found this "pearl of great price," Christian Science, will affirm that the absolute, convincing proof of Christian Science is in individual, daily experience. This crown of rejoicing no man taketh from us. Humanity is fact awakening to know that God's will concerning man never changes. All that ever can be changed is attitude toward God.

Baton Rouge, La. (First Church).—Mrs. Eliza Pegues Griffing spoke as follows when introducing Dr. Walton Hubbard, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience:—

Christian Science, the religion of Love, founded on the teachings of the Bible, as lived and practiced by Christ Jesus, our Master and Way-shower, is bringing to thousands everywhere the healing and comforting message of God's omnific power, all-embracing presence, and unchanging love. I came to Christian Science in an effort to help one very dear to me who was in the toils of sickness. Needless to say, the loved one was healed. And I also experienced a very wonderful healing of an obstruction to my breathing which had been with me practically all my life. For these healings, but more by far for the unshaken knowledge that God is Love, I am deeply grateful.

Gothenburg, Sweden (Society).—Count Sigge Cronstedt made the following remarks prefatory to a lecture on Christian Science by John J. Flinn:—

The great Teacher of religion and the Founder of Christianity gave to the world the promise that the Comforter, or Helper, should come, and that when it came it would lead us into the whole truth; that it would teach us to understand all that Jesus said, including his assertion that an understanding of the truth makes free. Has the world at any time needed this freedom more than now? How encouraging it is to know that in our midst is the help we need! Thousands upon thousands are, as I am, glad and thankful to be able to testify that for us Christian Science has shown itself to be the Comforter that leads into all truth.

Denver, Colo. (Second Church).—Introducing John Randall Dunn, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience, Mrs. Luella Allen Perry said in part:—

In one of his essays Emerson writes, "Health or sound organization should be universal." Why, then, the sickness, suffering, and disaster which are prevalent in the world to-day? Solomon says, "As he thinketh in his heart, so is he." Christian Science teaches that sickness and sin have their origin in erroneous thinking; and if the fear of and belief in these abnormal conditions could be excluded from thought, they could not appear in effect. How important, then, that we endeavor to obey Paul's injunction to think only on the things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report!

Hoquiam, Wash. (First Church).—Miss Mary Malcolm Treher made the following introductory remarks at a Christian Science lecture by Miss Mary G. Ewing:—

Christian Science is based entirely on an understanding of God as divine Principle, Life, Truth, and Love. This understanding is demonstrable in our daily affairs here and now. We learn that God's eternal laws operate unceasingly. They never change, and are for all mankind in every age. Christian Science indorses, in every respect, all of Jesus' teachings, which, of course, include the healing of the sick.

Omaha, Nebr. (First Church).—The following remarks by Mrs. Ethel M. McCandless were made prefatory to a Christian Science lecture by Bicknell Young:—

The Psalmist said, "He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." For those who have eyes to see and ears to hear—in other words, those who are learning how to think—this promise is being fulfilled to-day. Through an understanding of the Word of God, as revealed by Christian Science, an unnumbered host is being delivered from sin and disease of every name and nature. Many are healed by reading the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. And so irresistible is the power of the Word, when spoken with understanding, that very often people are healed while listening to a Christian Science lecture. I know that the foregoing is true, for about fifteen years ago I was healed of a very painful disorder while attending one of these lectures. For six weeks I had not been able to stand on my feet without suffering great distress. As I listened earnestly and prayerfully to the gracious words of truth spoken by the lecturer, I was completely and permanently healed of the ailment. I had gone to the church that evening with a fearful heart and dragging footsteps. I went home as if on wings, praising God for Christian Science and its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy. The prophecy of Isaiah had again been fulfilled, for God had indeed given me the "oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness."
