Real Freedom

A Scripture verse that Christian Scientist often quote is, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." The verse is inspiring and of great comfort, but the fact is sometimes overlooked that the wondrous promise it contains follows a loving admonition. The complete quotation is, "If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

There must be something more than a mere crying out of "Lord, Lord;" there must be the conscious and continuous pursuit of knowledge sufficient to apprehend our discipleship. There must be an earnest striving for the Mind of Christ, for a larger love, and a clinging fast to the Word when sorrow, or hardship, or misadventure seems apparent in experience. There must be an unswerving adherence to divine Principle in the face of seeming defeat, a progressive steadfastness which carries us forward when things appear at a standstill. It is only through steadfastness that we earn that discipleship which enables us to discern the liberating truth.

The word "disciple" comes from the same root as "discipline," a word in which there is the thought of development through training and correction, an elevation through education. If we are to become true disciples of the Master, we must accept with understanding the correction which follows our missteps. "Thy rod" will comfort as well as "thy staff." Mrs. Eddy says on page 208 of "Miscellaneous Writings," "His rod brings to view His love, and interprets to mortals the gospel of healing." As we accept the gentle chastisements of Love, we shall become true disciples; for we shall be under the schoolmaster which brings us to Christ, Truth. This is the first step toward freedom, the real freedom of the sons of God.
