In 1917 I was taken ill

In 1917 I was taken ill. The doctor I called said I had consumption; so I went to a small city to see another doctor. The first doctor had ordered me to go at once to California, saying I never could be entirely healed, but by change of climate, diet, and an operation or two I could put off the fatal day. The second doctor said he thought if I would take his treatment I could at least stay at home until fall. I seemed to improve for a while under his treatment, but in May was taken so ill I called another doctor, who ordered me to bed and began treatment for bladder trouble. As I had been suffering from this ailment off and on for about ten years, the doctor thought I probably had Bright's disease. He treated me until I could take his medicine no longer, and could not even retain a drink of water. Then he told my husband to take me somewhere to a hospital, as he could not do any more for me.

My husband had seen demonstrations of Christian Science, but I never had. After much persuasion I consented to his calling a practitioner over long distance telephone and asking him to treat me. After asking a few questions the practitioner consented to give me treatment; and my husband said, "If she is able, I will bring her down to-morrow." i slept better that night, and the next morning said, "I feel as though I could take the juice of an orange, but the doctor said I was not to have any fruit." My husband said, "You can eat what you like." That morning i took the juice of two oranges and a bowl of chicken broth. At two o'clock I got up, was dressed, and took the train. That evening the practitioner called on us at the hotel, gave me a treatment, and patiently answered the many questions I asked him about Christian Science. The next morning I went down to the dining room and ate a very hearty meal. We asked the practitioner if he could find a place for me in the home of a Christian Scientist. This he did; and in one week I went home a strong, well woman. One trouble which still bothered me after I went home was a sore nose, which was very apparent. The doctor had said that this could be overcome only by an operation. I discovered, some time after returning home, that the condition had entirely disappeared; and it has not returned.

I am very grateful for these healings, and to all those who so kindly helped me to gain an understanding of Christian Science, which has made clear to me the meaning of Jesus' words, "I am the way, the truth, and the life."
