The Lectures

Leeds, England (First Church).—The following introductory remarks were made by Charles Wright at a Christian Science lecture by A. Hervey-Bathurst:—

The attention of the whole world is fixed on Christian Science because it is proving by its works that the correct and exact understanding of God and of His spiritual law, which Jesus possessed, and which enabled his to do the wondrous works he did, is as available to-day as in his time to do the same wonderful deeds of healing and to inspire the same happiness that he possessed. Christian Science is reassuring millions of people that they are not separated from God, for He has never put any obstacle between them and Him, but He loves them and is teaching them to pray the prayer which is always answered. There is not a Christian Scientist but could testify that his life has become better, healthier, and more joyful than before he knew of Christian Science. It is a fact often remarked by those who are not Christian Scientists that those who have accepted its teaching are among the happiest people they know. During the last ten years my wife and I have relied wholly on its teachings to overcome every trouble that has arisen in our lives; and I can assure you that it has never once failed us when faithfully and understandingly applied.

Greeley, Colo. (First Church).—The following prefatory remarks were made by John J. Domke at a Christian Science lecture by Paul Stark Seeley:—

Human endeavor always has been towards the attainment of good; but often this endeavor has failed, because of either not knowing where to find the source of good or else employing wrong methods in trying to reach it. Bible history bears out the fact that whenever individuals or nations sought God, and lived up to certain spiritual laws of God, they were prosperous and happy, but when God was forsaken and they lived after their own inventions, disaster would follow. Christ Jesus came to show and prove man's true relationship to God, the only source of good. He not only called God his Father, but also told his followers that God was their Father, thus establishing man's spiritual origin and relationship to God. That the teachings of Christ Jesus have a spiritual basis was also proved, when on one occasion he said, "The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life." The Apostle Paul once wrote to his associates: "The law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. ... For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." A material world, however, failed to understand the full import of these statements. It remained for Christian Science to give to this generation, in modern language, the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures. It has given us a scientific analysis of the universe, and definite workable rules, which, if understood and applied, will bring into our experience only good.

New York, N. Y. (Sixth Church).—The following prefatory remarks were made by Eugene Morgenthal at a Christian Science lecture by Mrs. Blanche K. Corby:—

Recently, while visiting my mother, I said to her, "Do you realize that Christian Science has added ten years to your life?" She gratefully acknowledged that it had. About ten years ago Christian Science was presented to us, when mother was suffering intense pain from what the doctors had pronounced an incurable disease. We procured a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of Christian Science, and for five months studied faithfully. To the best of our ability we applied its teachings. Gradually one symptom and then another vanished, until the so-called incurable disease was cured. During those first months I studied the textbook with a hungering desire to know. I saw at once that Mary Baker Eddy had discovered the divine Principle, whose laws were diametrically opposed to everything I had learned up to that time about human existence. I accepted her teachings, followed her instructions, and applied them with all the understanding I possessed to my daily problems. What joy and satisfaction were mine when I found they worked exactly as Mrs. Eddy tells us! From that time to this I have continued to follow closely the teachings of Christian Science; and I rejoice today in a fuller realization of God's goodness, His allness, and His loving-kindness to His dear children.

Minneapolis, Minn. (Fifth Church).—Eubertis L. Jaynes spoke as follows when introducingDr. Walton Hubbard, a Christian Science lecturer, to his audience:—

According to the Scripture, when God created man He gave him dominion over all. In many places in Scripture man is promised health, happiness, riches. Yet we see all about us much of suffering, unhappiness, and poverty, and we are led to ask ourselves, Why? Christian Science teaches us that our conception of God and His creation has been wrong. We have not understood God as divine Principle, Life, Truth, Love, the Giver of all good, beside whom there is no other. Mrs. Eddy states on page 255 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" that "eternal Truth is changing the universe;" and following the teachings of this noble woman many have learned that God is perfect, and that His whole creation is just as perfect as He is and expresses Him. They have found that suffering, unhappiness, and poverty are but false beliefs, and have learned how to eliminate them from their consciousness. Hundreds of thousands have been healed of all manner of diseases. Poverty has been overcome through a knowledge of the truth. Christian Science is indeed bringing the world into a better understanding of Him "whom to know aright is Life eternal" (Science and Health, Pref., p. vii).

Galveston, Texas (First Church).—Introducing Miss Lucia C. Coulson, a Christian Science lecturer, to her audience, Donald J. MacGregor spoke as follows:—

A suffering humanity is taught that it cannot be saved while alive and that the only way to get rid of all trouble is to die out of it. Christian Science declares that deliverance from evil is at hand, and that there is a way out here and now. If there was nothing else in Christian Science to attract the attention of men it would be done by this incomparable promise; and the only open question is whether the promise is being fulfilled. An ever increasing multitude of men and women, beneficiaries of the ministry of Christian Science, bear grateful and abundant testimony as to its fulfillment, in a larger knowledge of God and the law by which His power and beneficence are manifested, and in their redemption from the blackness of despair and the abyss of disease and torment.

Sioux City, Iowa (Second Church).—Harry M. Graber made the following introductory remarks at a Christian Science lecture by John J. Flinn:—

All humanity needs Christian Science. In the language of our Master, Christian Science says unto all mankind: "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me. ... For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." About sixteen years ago, when my burden of ill health and discouragement seemed greater than I could bear, and after all other means of healing had failed me, I turned to Christian Science, and found health, happiness, prosperity, hope, faith, and courage, far more abundantly than I had ever before dreamed possible for me.
