Christ Jesus laid great stress on the works resulting from true understanding and obedience, well knowing, as his own experience proved, that the corrective effects of the spirituality he taught and demonstrated include the healing of disease as well as the overcoming of sin and death. The truth Jesus lived is spiritually understood, but it is also visibly manifested in a form comprehensible to the human consciousness as being above, and having power over, every material condition. Mrs. Eddy says in the Preface to "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. x), "The divine Principle of healing is proved in the personal experience of any sincere seeker of Truth;" and on the same page, "The unbiased Christian thought is soonest touched by Truth, and convinced of it." Mrs. Eddy makes it plain that one must be in the mental state where he is willing to turn from the world and seek the kingdom of God, in order to experience spiritual healing; he must also be honest.

Mrs. Eddy's statements quoted above coincide with the experiences of Jesus, of whom it is recorded in Matthew, "And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief." Christian Scientists believe in the omnipotent power of God, good; and they demonstrate good as far as they comprehend and obey the commands of the Savior; but they do not profess to go beyond what Jesus did in connection with those who still cling to the world's methods of healing, and who have not reached the point where they are willing to trust God. When Jesus was tempted of the devil, the demand was made on the Savior that he cast himself from the pinnacle as proof of being the Son of God; and the tempter quoted the Bible as justification for requiring this proof. Jesus replied, "It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God." When to-day, in the same manner, the human mind challenges the works of the Christ-mind, and calls on the followers of the Savior to perform wholesale healings where the thought is unprepared to acknowledge God, then Christian Science does not pretend to depart from the divine order but continues its work among those who are ready and willing to strive to be Godlike.
