Christian Science has been in my home as long as I can...
Christian Science has been in my home as long as I can remember; and while during our early experience we were not actively engaged in the study of it, yet I was very small when I remember my parents' carrying all of the various medicines from the medicine closet to the waste barrel. Very soon both my sister and I were placed in the Sunday school of The Mother Church, which we attended for some years, later going to the Sunday school of a branch church. Within the past two years it has been my happy privilege to receive class instruction, for which I am daily grateful; and I am equally grateful for the opportunity of being actively engaged in the work and practice of Christian Science.
I have been healed of many physical ills; and many of the healings have been instantaneous. At one time, when I was engaged in athletics, my feet were badly cut in a game of ice hockey; yet with the loving help of a practitioner I was able to fill my position in the series of championship games the following week. A slight rupture was also completely healed. When I was a boy my feet seemed to be developing into an abnormal shape; but after a few treatments the deformity disappeared.
During my experience in the war service I was constantly receiving help through Christian Science. Later, when entering aviation in the navy, I was greatly helped in the various subjects studied while at the Ground School, which were new to me and quite difficult. Physical examinations, which were many, never caused any comment from the doctors, save that I had passed perfectly; and the inoculations which we were obliged to take never caused any inconvenience; in fact, only one left a small red spot for a few hours, and no swelling.
While in aviation I fell twice. At another time, when testing a new type of machine, I flew into a large anchor buoy, which was hidden from my view. On the occasions of the first fall and the crash into the buoy, though the machines were completely wrecked, I was not hurt in the slightest. In the second fall my passenger was knocked unconscious, and in the hospital for over a week; but I escaped with a few cuts and bruises, and some disturbed teeth. In this experience I was piloting the plane from the front seat, and when the machine hit the water I was submerged completely. I have no recollection of freeing myself from the wreckage, but later found myself on the surface looking for my passenger, who was under water. To all appearances I was in a more serious position than the one in the rear seat, and I am thoroughly convinced that it was the understanding of our heavenly Father's protection which freed me, and enabled me to assist the other person sufficiently so that he was soon conscious and able to help himself.
In our home I have seen many forms of disease healed, among which were crossed-eyes straightened and the use of glasses discontinued; also paralysis, typhoid fever, an attack of appendicitis, and toothache. All of these were healed with the help of faithful practitioners.
I am grateful to God for His loving-kindness to all mankind; to Christ Jesus, our Way-shower; to Mary Baker Eddy, our dear Leader, who gave us this demonstrable Science; and to all those who have helped me to know more clearly the relationship of man to God.
