The Lectures

The Hague, Holland (First Church).—Mr. David A. Giel, introducing a Christian Science lecturer, spoke as follows:—

In the present-day world the number of those who are losing confidence in God, good, is fast increasing; and many people, in feeling their lack of a sustaining rule for life and thought, are sinking,—morally, mentally, or physically. Seeing that materialism and selfishness are seemingly gaining ground, they are looking for a new religion that gives proof of its efficiency here and now,—for a God they can understand and worship as the perfect concept of Love and justice. I was one of these; and I have found in Christian Science all I needed, and all I can possibly need. The revelation of its God-ideal in its sublime purity has been to me the new birth spoken of by Jesus; and the demonstrations that followed its acceptance have given me love and strength to begin and to persevere in the struggle to "put off the old man with his deeds," by purifying motive and thought; and I can truly testify, not that I am better than my neighbor, but that through Christian Science I have become a much better, a healthier and happier man than I ever was before.

New York, N. Y. (Society of Columbia University).—The following prefatory remarks were made by Mrs. Ruth Clement Hoyer at a Christian Science lecture:—

In the life of almost every one, there is some great need crying to be met. It may not be sickness or death. It may be sorrow or sadness, personal dislike, animosity, or discord of any kind, that is weighing us down and influencing the perfect harmony of our lives. Christian Science teaches us how to overcome and that we must overcome error of all kinds, however trivial that error may seem to our sense. Christian Science assures us that harmony is the rightful existence of man, and, as Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 307), "This sweet assurance is the 'Peace, be still' to all human fears, to suffering of every sort."
