The Lectures

Richmond, England (First Church).—In introducing a Christian Science lecturer, Mr. F. J. Harvey said:—

Our Master said: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Students of Christian Science humbly and gratefully acknowledge that the revelation of Truth is here to-day in Christian Science; and through its teachings they have been enabled to demonstrate in some measure, individually, the promised freedom. It is through demonstration that Christian Science is proved to be the Comforter which should lead into all truth.

Christian Science has saved my life from one of restless casting around to know the why and the wherefore of the impressions forced upon me by my environment, and also from the fear of illness and its effects. It has given me a reason for my being. It has steadily improved my condition in every way. Once Christian Science was put to a severe test in my experience. I was taken suddenly seriously ill during an epidemic, and to allay the fears of friends the doctor was called in, who after an examination said he could do nothing, as the case was hopeless, beyond him. However, hearing that Christian Science treatment was going to be persisted in, in spite of his expressed fears and helplessness, he surprised and encouraged us by saying, "Stick to him then and he will pull through." Does not such an instance show how Christian Science is, on its merits, commending itself? It is commanding respect and attention because it heals, and those working with theories unlike the Christ-method of healing are surely recognizing this. My case is only one out of many.

Is it any wonder that we desire to share these blessings? In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 254), we read, "Pilgrim on earth, thy home is heaven: stranger, thou art the guest of God." "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace." Such an opportunity to acquaint ourselves with God is provided for us now.

Pittsfield, Mass. (First Church).—When introducing a Christian Science lecturer the following prefatory remarks were made by Mr. Archie E. Van Ostrand:—

The prophet Jeremiah, in speaking of the new covenant which God would make with His people, declared that God would put His law in their inward parts and write it in their hearts; that He would be their God; and that all men should know Him from the least to the greatest. It is surely becoming more apparent to all mankind that the salvation of the world from war, famine, and pestilence, sin, disease, and death, does not come from human philosophy or material science, but that it must come through a greater knowledge of God and His universal law of love, accepted, understood, and practiced.

I have had the privilege during the past year of listening to some very eminent men—among them the late Lord Bryce of England—upon the great problems which are confronting humanity; and each one, without exception, has come to the conclusion that the solution of these world problems must be found in the teachings and practice of Christianity as taught by Christ Jesus. Christian Science is here as the fulfillment of prophecy; and we have invited you here this evening to listen to what Christian Science has to offer for the solution of present-day problems.

Downers Grove, Ill. (First Church).—Mr. F. Sibley Mann made the following prefatory remarks when introducing a Christian Science lecturer:—

It is recorded in the eighth chapter of Luke that the disciples who were with Jesus, becoming fearful of the storm, called unto him, saying: "Master, master, we perish." And when he had rebuked the wind and the waves and there was calm again, he said unto them, "Where is your faith?" Were they believing more in the power of the wind and the waves to destroy them than they were in the power of God to save them?

The same question is repeated to-day, "Where is your faith?" Is your faith in matter or is it in Spirit, God? Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 368), says: "When we come to have more faith in the truth of being than we have in error, more faith in Spirit than in matter, more faith in living than in dying, more faith in God than in man, then no material suppositions can prevent us from healing the sick and destroying error."

In the Preface to Science and Health (p. xi) she wrote, "When God called the author to proclaim His Gospel to this age, there came also the charge to plant and water His vineyard." In response to this call Mrs. Eddy established the many activities of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, which are proclaiming and demonstrating Christ's Christianity with signs following.
