[Written for the Sentinel]

Lilies and Deeds

Deep in the earth
A lily heard the call:
Go forth—proclaim your faith
In Life's unfailing power.
Obedient,
Green leaves uprose
One above another.
A bud lifted its cup,
Brimmed it with pure radiance,
And wide outflung
Petals milk-white.
Forth from its golden heart,
Like sweet incense of prayer,
Impartial, streamed its fragrance
Prodigally.

Can I not hear
My Father's call, and pour
My faith in Love abroad—
Gentle, patient, kind—to heal
Earth's weary ones?
Christ is risen!
Sin, sorrow, pain, and death
Are lost in the glory
Of His love—through whom I live
Abundantly.
