I have received so much good from the study and practice...

I have received so much good from the study and practice of Christian Science that I deem it a duty to send my testimony. Three years ago I was down and out physically and nearly the same mentally. I had injured my arm and was unable to do any manual labor. The elbow had been sprained back until the joint was enlarged, and the ligaments in front were torn loose from the bone. The only means of relief suggested was to get a rubber sleeve to wear on the crippled arm.

Since I had a family to provide and care for, having my arm crippled caused mental worry, and like most drinking men, being what is termed a periodical drunkard, I went to the drink shop to seek comfort and help. I poisoned myself with liquor for three or four weeks and one morning in my stupefied condition concluded that I was sick and got hold of some dope that looked like quinine and took some. The stuff is considered a deadly poison. The physician said I had taken enough to kill a dozen men, and that ordinarily if one had taken but one twelfth of the dose he would have passed on. The result of all this left me with a ruined stomach, and anything that I drank or ate caused vomiting. I suffered until I began to feel that life was not worth living.

Some of the family wanted me to try Christian Science, and I finally consented. A practitioner came to see me and gave me treatment. I did not receive much relief until late that night, about ten or eleven o'clock. Then I took a drink of something and retained it and the vomiting stopped from that time on. At the end of the second day the pains and ailments were all gone, but I was still very weak. At the end of the week I was free from all bodily ailments and all mental troubles were brushed away. I am most thankful to God for the blessing of perfect health and a mind at peace, and I am grateful to Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. I have a great deal more to be thankful for, because Christian Science not only put me in good health, but has kept me in good health.

My sickness was caused by worry over a crippled arm. The arm must have been healed during treatment by the practitioner. All I know is that it became well, perfect and painless, and I follow my usual manual labor without any pain in the elbow that had been pronounced incurable. I had been a smoker and a chewer of tobacco for forty-seven years, and had used intoxicating drink from childhood, but after I had studied Christian Science for about three months, the desire to smoke or chew tobacco left me entirely. I had three or four kinds of tobacco and also cigars on my table all the time, as my three sons were smokers, but tobacco was no temptation. The desire for intoxicating drink left me at the same time. To know for sure whether I wanted drink or not I went off about seven miles to visit the saloons to see if I was done with it. I tried three or four different brands of liquor, but could do nothing with them, and to the best of my belief it would be a punishment for me to be compelled to drink anything intoxicating or to smoke or chew tobacco. This is a greater blessing to me than I can express in words, and I am surely thankful to God for this wonderful healing.
