Christian Science makes the same distinction as does the Bible between the real man created by God in His image and spiritual likeness mentioned in the first chapter of Genesis, and the mortal or material formation of man by the Lord God (Jehovah) recorded in the second chapter. In the meeting with Nicodemus on the housetop at night, Jesus also makes this plain in these words: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Paul, in his epistle to the Romans, also pointed this out, for he writes, "They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God."

This distinction between the real man or spiritual man of God's creating and the mortal or material concept, revealed through the spiritual interpretation of the Scriptures, harmonizes many of the apparent inconsistencies of the Bible and illumines with the light of spiritual understanding those portions which, taken materially and literally, have heretofore seemed dark and obscure.

Christian Science makes the same distinction as did the Master himself between Jesus, the human man, and Christ, the divine idea. Of the former he said, "I can of mine own self do nothing," and of the latter, "Before Abraham was, I am," and "Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world." If this Christ is ever with us, then his second coming must surely be the apprehension of the divine manifestation of God which comes to us through spiritual understanding, casting out error and all inharmony.
