In the fall of 1905, during the illness of a dear sister who was reaching out for healing in Christian Science for a chronic trouble which material remedies had failed to relieve, the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, was given me to read. After a few weeks spent in the perusal of this book I decided that I would like a copy of my own, and straightway purchased one. During the weeks that followed I did little else than study this book, as I wished to help the sister who needed the healing so much. I, however, approached the subject with an open mind, knowing that if it held anything of truth it would be revealed to me, and through this study I was healed of a bowel difficulty dating from childhood, also of another trouble which had caused much suffering. To me this was ample proof that the healing taught by Jesus was still available to mankind, and I at once decided that my future must be guided by its teaching.

With three young children in my care it required considerable courage to give up all material remedies, and many times comfort and assurance have come to me through these words from Science and Health (p. 494): "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need." Inflammatory and sciatic rheumatism and the ailments common to children have been promptly overcome, either through my own efforts or the help of a practitioner. For all these proofs of God's protecting care I am indeed grateful, as well as for another healing, which occurred about three years ago. For five years before that I had suffered from hemorrhoids which at times became aggravated and painful. While I never had a doubt of the power of Truth to heal me, my own efforts to demonstrate over this condition brought only temporary relief, so finally, when the suffering became so severe that it seemed unwise to struggle longer, I asked a practitioner for treatment and was healed instantaneously. The healing has been permanent.

Financial and home problems have been wonderfully solved, and through the leading of Truth I have had the benefit of class instruction. I am grateful for the privilege of seeing our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy; the memory of her sweet face is ever with me as proof that the truth she gave to the world had enriched and strengthened her own life beyond measure. I am grateful also to our Publishing Society, which through the foresight of our Leader is sending out the daily, weekly, and monthly messengers of Truth. The Monitor is a missionary to the whole world, and when it is universally read must heal the thought of the people and establish right thinking with all.

Even greater than for all these is my gratitude for the true understanding of a perfect heavenly Father who has only good things for His children. Before I knew of Christian Science, when sorrow and suffering and bereavement came into my life the argument that it was God's will seemed so inconsistent and unjust that I could not reconcile myself to a God who was less kind and just than my human parent, who would have spared me such suffering had it been in his power to do so. Then followed years of work and diversion, and a feeling that somehow God must be right even if the whole world did seem to be wrong. Again I took up my work in the church to gain comfort from its teaching, but I could not understand the Bible and only read it from a sense of duty. Many times I wondered if God really did answer prayer; if so, why were not my own prayers and those of others answered?

All this time God was leading me and the soil was being prepared for the seed of Truth, so when Christian Science came to me with its teaching of a God who is the divine Principle of all that really is, who is Life, Truth, and Love, omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent good, I was ready to receive it and to strive daily to prove for myself and others that the Christ is ever present and will bring all good to pass here and now in proportion as we "make channels for the streams of love," as a loved hymn expresses it.
