No Lack

Some months ago, while the writer was endeavoring to bring out the practical value of the commandments in a Sunday school class, a question that came up was answered in a way which has proven so helpful many times since, that the experience is passed along with the hope that it may aid some other searcher for Truth along the same lines. The commandment under discussion was the tenth, "Thou shalt not covet," and the effort was being made to bring home to the pupils the thought that God's children can never lack any good thing. "But," objected one earnest little girl, "some children do have things I want and cannot have." There was a note of rebellion as well as puzzled questioning in the voice, and it was clearly seen that this must be met with the truth before the lesson for the day would bring the desired result.

For a moment a sense of helplessness seemed to cloud the teacher's thought; then a silent prayer for guidance went out to God, to the Mind that always hears, and never fails to answer when we honestly and whole-heartedly turn to Him. The answer came promptly, and with it a light which has brought peace and joy many times since when the clouds of sense seemed to dim the upward path.

The thought contained in the following passage from page 361 of our inspired text-book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, brought the needed illumination: "As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being." The words stood out clear, concise, convincing, casting out all sense of uncertainty as to how to meet the problem at hand. Without fear or hesitation the question was asked, "Can one sunbeam lack anything which another sunbeam has?" Quickly and confidently, in a voice free from all conflict, the reply came from the pupil, "Why, of course not." Then we talked along the lines already referred to, and the lesson ended happily, with the grateful knowledge that good seed had been sown in that vineyard where each finds his rightful work and place, be it great or small to human sense, if we hear and obey each call as it comes from Him who guides the stars in their courses.
