The Lectures
Concord, N. H. (First Church).—Prof. Hermann S. Hering, lecturer; introduced by the Hon. Arthur P. Morrill, speaker of the state House of Representatives, who said in part:—
It would be difficult to imagine a more appropriate place than this beautiful church in the city of Concord in which to listen to God's Word as interpreted by a follower of Mrs. Eddy. The name of this wonderful woman is known and honored throughout the civilized world, and our beloved city reaps a great and lasting benefit in the reflected glory of the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science.
It is well to pause from time to time and consider certain facts with which we are all familiar; so let us review for a moment some of the events in the life of Mrs. Eddy in connection with our home city. Mrs. Eddy was born in the neighboring town of Bow and spent many of the most fruitful of her mature years within our borders, having established a beautiful and sightly home at Pleasant View, which I hope will ever be a shrine for her loving admirers. How well we remember when, in years gone by, Mrs. Eddy on rare occasions would permit the word to go out that she would greet her friends for a few moments at Pleasant View. Special trains would crowd our railroad yards and the resources of our little city would be taxed almost beyond belief to care for our guests, the Christian Scientists from beyond our borders.
Concord has shared indeed in the world wide fame of this great teacher as well as in her broad public mindedness and generous philanthropy, and I, as a citizen of Concord, though not a member of the Christian Science faith, am proud to stand in this church erected through the munificence of Mrs. Eddy during her life and pay my own bit of tribute to this good and famous woman.—Concord Monitor.
Lexington, Mass. (First Church).—William W. Porter, lecturer; introduced by Oliver Zell Crane, who said in part:—
Jesus the Christ, our divine Exemplar, proved his perfect understanding of Truth by effacing error and discord of every sort, destroying sin, and healing sickness and disease, all of which was in reality the unfoldment to humanity of his consciousness of Truth. In like manner Christian Science, founded upon the same basic, absolute truth as were Jesus' words and deeds, is bringing forth the fruits of the Spirit, the "signs following" of which Jesus spoke, blessing us with health, holiness, happiness, and peace, and declaring to mankind that as God is Truth, and as God is infinite, there is no truth except of God.
Winnemucca, Nev. (Society).—John Randall Dunn, lecturer; introduced by Attorney L. G. Campbell, who said in part:—
I am comparatively little informed on Christian Science, but "by their fruits ye shall know them," and I do know from my observation of those of the faith of the speaker that Christian Science makes for the very opposite of stress, war, and turmoil. I do know from my observation of them that Christian Science makes for peace, rest, and resultant happiness, contentment, and good citizenship. If therefore the precedent malice and mental turmoil can be eradicated by theirs and other beliefs that make for peace, happiness, and good citizenship, war and physical clash will vanish as darkness before the sunrise. There never was a time when the world was so sorely in need of teachings that point to peace and rest.—The Humboldt Star.
St. Charles, Ill. (Society).—Charles I. Ohrenstein, lecturer; introduced by Attorney Harry G. Hempstead, who said in part:—
The optimism and faith of Christian Scientists is inspiring, to say the least, even to those who have not adopted this teaching. Their faith that they will be taken care of and guided through the ups and downs of their daily life, leads one to believe that they have found something of practical use and for every-day application. This is also borne out by the rapidity with which their churches are being built and filled, not with people who are willing to accept idle promises, but with intelligent, thinking people, who must be shown the fruits of a faith before adopting it. Christian Scientists tell us this is not a new belief, but the old time religion, with a practical interpretation as found by Mrs. Eddy.
Stockton, Cal. (Second Church).—Dr. Walton Hubbard, lecturer; introduced by Mrs. Flora Stinchfield, who said in part:—
A little over fifty years ago there was but one Christian Scientist in the world, and that one its Discoverer and Founder, Mrs. Eddy. The influence of that one woman's work for humanity is being felt throughout the entire world today, and great numbers are depending upon Christian Science for their health and happiness. Now there must be a reason for this remarkable and steadfast growth. There is an old saying that "a grain of proof is worth a pound of argument." It is because Christian Science is reaching and fulfilling the needs of humanity by repeating the works of the Master, Christ Jesus, according to an exact Science founded upon the Bible, that thinking people are pondering its teachings.
