My testimony is given with the desire to encourage those...
My testimony is given with the desire to encourage those who may have to pass through similar experiences, and openly to glorify the Father. Brought up in a so-called Christian manner, that is, according to the ritual, dogma, and catechism of the worship of an anthropomorphic God, I had abandoned every belief in such a God and become a materialist, even an antireligionist. In the years 1907 and 1908, however, great sorrows, accompanied by loss of fortune, prepared me to receive the Science of Christ. The study of this Science gradually changed my life completely, explaining all that I had never understood and revealing a just God who knows only good.
As I advanced in understanding, the truth delivered me from several forms of bondage. First heart disease disappeared, then the smoking habit of twenty years' standing. Every previous effort to smoke less had grievously failed, but all desire to smoke left me at once, without causing any sense of deprivation. Since that time I have also been able to eat every kind of food which previously made me ill.
In September, 1910, an opportunity presented itself to prove that matter has of itself neither intelligence nor sensation. Some fireworks exploded in my hand and terribly burned it. In the first moment of surprise I suffered, but by turning directly to Truth, with the help of a practitioner who was present, I was able to realize that matter has no sensation. From that instant all suffering ceased to such an extent that I slept calmly, and no swelling or fever was manifested.
The next day, though my arm was in a sling, I climbed a mountain with some friends. In spite of the pessimistic diagnosis given some days later by two doctors of an insurance company to whose examination a contract obliged me to submit, the healing was rapid and no scars remain. This was an occasion for me to leave material insurance and insure myself in truth. It was impossible for me to solicit my neighbor to place his trust where I could no longer place mine, so I resigned from my position as collector for an insurance company; but since leaving my former business I have learned that God, divine Love, never abandons those who put their trust in Him.
Christian Science in giving me the true God, whom I can love above all else, has transformed my mentality and revealed to me the new heavens and the new earth where justice reigns.—Reginald Law, Geneva, Switzerland.
Until I became acquainted with Christian Science I was frequently ill, suffering from dreadful headaches, and nearly every day for twenty years from stomach disorder and other ailments. All these have been completely overcome.
Some time ago I fell from a bicycle, injuring my knee so badly that I was obliged to keep to my room for several weeks. This was an occasion to work seriously for my spiritual advancement, for hitherto my life had been so active, in a material sense, that I was a slave to the belief of being obliged to act like Martha. Until impatience and fear were overcome the healing was slow and the inflammation persistent. I asked help from a friend who is a practitioner, and learned that fear is sin, a lack of confidence in God; that the Bible teaches us that it is "in him we live, and move, and have our being." Finally I could say, in the words of the hymn on page 98 of our Hymnal, that "the longing to be good and true" had "brought the light again." This "longing," lived so faithfully by our dear Leader, Mrs. Eddy, gives her the right to our inexpressible gratitude.
