Announcement
In answer to numerous inquiries it may be said that the two funds to which the field have been invited to contribute, described in the article "Looking Forward," which appeared in the Sentinel of Dec. 2, 1916, are separate and distinct in purpose. The "real estate fund" is to secure title to properties in the vicinity of The Mother Church. The "Benevolent Association fund" is to erect and equip the buildings and provide a maintenance fund for that institution. In sending a contribution please specify for which fund it is intended, or if it is to be divided between the two. Remittances should be made to Adam H. Dickey, Treasurer, 236 Huntington Avenue, Back Bay, Boston, Mass.
The following excerpts from letters received from branch churches express the thankfulness of Christian Scientists for the opportunity to contribute to these funds:—
"I am directed by my board to send you the following resolutions which were passed by the members of this branch church assembled in annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 15, 1917:—
"Resolution No. 1.—That we, the members of First Church of Christ, Scientist, London, assembled in annual meeting hereby pledge ourselves to contribute a minimum of £5000 to the two funds referred to in the Sentinel of Dec. 2, 1916, to be divided between the two funds at the discretion of The Christian Science Board of Directors in Boston.
"Resolution No. 2.—That a fund be opened by this church to be called the 'Looking Forward' fund, the amounts received thereon to be remitted from time to time to the district manager of the Christian Science committees on publication at the discretion of the board.
"I am further desired to inform you that a collection was taken on the same evening in aid of the Christian Science Benevolent Association, which resulted in the sum of £627 3s. 7d. being collected, which will in due course be forwarded to Mr. Tennant, here in London."
"We take pleasure in notifying you that at a meeting of the members of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, of Hartford, Conn., held Jan. 10, it was unanimously voted to pledge the sum of one thousand dollars in response to the call in the Sentinel of Dec. 2, 1916, this sum to be provided by the collections taken on the first Sunday of each month until aforesaid amount shall have been raised, the total amount to be divided equally between the fund for the purchase of real estate adjacent to The Mother Church and the fund for the Christian Science Benevolent Association."
"The members of Second Church of Christ, Scientist, Minneapolis, Minn., in annual meeting assembled, appreciating the privilege afforded to assist in carrying out the purposes of the Christian Science Benevolent Association, in the erection and establishment of a Christian Science sanatorium, and The Board of Directors of The Mother Church in acquiring additional property for church purposes, do hereby pledge the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars ($25,000), to be paid from time to time, and to be applied for the respective purposes, in such proportion as your board may deem best.
"We are also taking advantage of this occasion to contribute the sum of two thousand dollars ($2000) to the fund for the relief of the war sufferers in Europe, herewith enclosing a check for that amount.
"We are deeply grateful to your board for the opportunity given us to cooperate with you in these renewed evidences of your efficient labors in carrying forward the plans and purposes of our revered Leader."
"We take pleasure in conveying to you the information that at the regular annual business meeting of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in San Francisco, Cal., held Monday evening, Jan. 8, 1917, the members unanimously pledged the sum of ten thousand dollars ($10,000) to the Christian Science Benevolent Association and the fund for the purchase of additional real estate, with the understanding that the amount on hand at the end of each month should be forwarded to the treasurer of The Mother Church until the entire sum is paid.
"We gratefully avail ourselves at this time of the opportunity to reaffirm our loyalty and obedience to The Board of Directors of The Mother Church, our purpose always to maintain the integrity of our mighty cause, and our joy and gratitude in being afforded this channel for furthering an expressed desire of our beloved Leader."
