I had never heard much about Christian Science until...

I had never heard much about Christian Science until June, 1916, when my sister, who had just returned from California, came to visit me. Several years before, feeling that I could not stand city life any longer, I went to the country, expecting to find health and happiness. I married into a family of God-loving and hard working people, and my husband and I lived on a farm. All seemed serene, but the health and happiness I thought would follow did not. Headaches and bowel trouble of many years' standing continued, and rheumatism set in. I took medicine every day and visited doctors from time to time. Normally my disposition was lively and pleasant, but I was becoming intolerant and faultfinding. Getting more unhappy and discordant, I besought my friends to help me overcome my faults; but they knew not how, for they were in the same mental condition as I was, believing that God sent all things, good and bad, for a wise purpose.

Then my dear sister arrived with the message of Christian Science, and a glorious spiritual uplift followed as I gained some understanding of it. I wanted to give it to every one, but to my amazement with but few exceptions all were offended. Early in July an attack of rheumatism came on, and for a few days the suffering was intense. My husband urged me to have a doctor, but I would not. Instead of leaning on God, however, I was using will power and of course getting worse. On Sunday my husband had to dress me, and though at first I felt I could not go to church I finally decided to do so, though the nearest Christian Science church is over twenty-five miles away. I will not dwell on the agony endured before arriving at the little church. It was communion Sunday, and such love and peace reigned there that during the reading of Science and Health with its wonderful messages of truth all pain left me.

Not only has my healing been permanent, but other discordant conditions have been overcome through Christian Science. The muscles of my leg became contracted and finally snapped, so that I was unable to walk, and was also in great pain, until a dear friend gave me a Christian Science treatment, after which I began to walk at once. The leg remained discolored and swollen for two weeks, but there was no more pain. A growth developed in my breast; but although my mother had passed on from such a condition and I had a latent fear that the same would happen to me, when this growth appeared I had no fear of it. At the time I was in a worried, jealous, and discordant condition, due to family and business troubles, so my prayer was for relief from that state of mind. After treating myself as taught by our beloved Leader in Science and Health, the discordant mental condition was overcome, and in a few weeks the growth also disappeared. I am very grateful for the many blessings I have received through the application of Christian Science.

Several years before coming into Christian Science I attended regularly a Bible class, but I never understood the Bible until I received the key through Christian Science. I always thought a Christian meant a Gentile who believed in Jesus, but now I know one is a Christian only to the extent that he does the works commanded by Christ Jesus. This testimony is given with the hope that it may benefit some one, and with deep gratitude to our revered Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, to whom the world owes everlasting gratitude for Science and Health with its true interpretation of the Bible, which enables us to know that God is an ever present help in trouble. I am grateful for the church services and literature, and pray daily that I may progress, and thereby express more of that Mind which was in Christ Jesus. My heart is filled with thankfulness to God for sending us Mrs. Eddy with the promised Comforter, divine Science.—Christine Plusch, Catskill, N. Y.
