[Written for the Sentinel]

"What of the night?"

The sleeper wakes—
And though the night be long,
It is awakening makes
The morning song
So delicate and dear,
To human ear.

New courage take;
And out of earth and ease
Awake! awake!
To love and labor
With the angel throng
Who fly their banner
From the folds of dawn,
Proclaiming peace
And happiness new-born.
A glad, sweet prelude
Of the life to be;
Striking deep chords
Toward eternity.
