Unconscious Disobedience

Very early in her experience the writer became convinced that extracts of association addresses, copies of private letters, and all other so-called "helps" to the understanding of the teachings of Christian Science, not only were valueless but were definitely prohibited by the provisions of the Manual of The Mother Church. Accordingly everything of this nature in her own possession was destroyed, and on a number of occasions opportunity was afforded to point out this subtle form of error to other young students, resulting in the destruction of a good deal of spurious literature.

After devoting a number of years to the study and practice of Christian Science, a very distressing form of physical disturbance appeared, and continued for many months, notwithstanding the most earnest mental work. It then began to be apparent that some latent error needed to be brought out of its hiding place, and further work to that end was undertaken.

Some weeks later, while looking through a package of clippings, a printed copy of a letter, purporting to have been written by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, and which had been cut from a daily paper, was discovered. In this letter were typographical errors which should have settled the status of the document for any Christian Scientist, in that the meaning of the sentences in which they occurred was so changed thereby as to attribute to our Leader statements which she never could have written. This false form of words was immediately destroyed, and the mental freedom which followed resulted in the disappearance of the physical manifestation above referred to.
