The Lectures

Bliss Knapp delivered two lectures on Christian Science under the auspices of Fourteenth Church of Christ, Scientist, in the assembly hall of the Ravenswood School. Ernest C. Moses in introducing the lecturer said:—

A modern writer has said: "You cannot dispose of a great man by traducing him; you cannot get rid of a great question by ignoring it; you cannot thwart a great cause by misrepresenting it. The man, the question, the cause will persistently recur and will not down." All of this applies to the man Christ Jesus and to the Christianity which he established; and because Christian Science by the will of God is today giving to mankind clear explanations of the nature and power of the Christ-man, and is reestablishing primitive Christianity in human consciousness by demonstrations of its divine Principle in the healing of sin and sickness everywhere, this Science persistently recurs "and will not down."

The wonderful vitality of this Science of Christianity is not due to any might or power of human personality and organization. It exists and succeeds because it is an exact demonstrable Science, a revelation from God, divine Principle, which meets the great need of humanity for health, morality, happiness, and true prosperity. Christian Science demonstrates the tender, compassionate love of God; and to understand it is to love it, for it sweetens life, satisfies every aspiration of the heart, elevates human character, heals the body, and overcomes all the inharmonies of mind and estate. We can all know and feel this in some degree right here this afternoon. This cause, which is surely unfolding to mortals the true nature of God and His Christ, was established through the wisdom, patient love, faith, and fidelity of one consecrated Christian woman. Mrs. Eddy discovered and founded Christian Science, and she initiated and established every one of its institutions.
