I turned to Christian Science for physical healing

I turned to Christian Science for physical healing. I had what is called paralysis of the bowels, and the doctor pronounced an operation necessary, although he said that he could not promise a permanent healing. It was expected that I would make my decision and go to the hospital the next day. During this period of doubt and indecision a Christian Science friend came in. When I informed her of my problem, she asked why I did not try Christian Science, saying that she had been healed of a similar condition, and it was God's work and permanent. I said, "If it is God's work, He is 'no respecter of persons,' and He will do as much for me."

I engaged a practitioner, and the healing was complete in five days. My happiness was unbounded at this freedom from bondage, as I had been afflicted since childhood, and had tried all the medicines recommended, but they would gradually cease to give relief. I had no Bible, but I never purchased anything so willingly as the Bible, also Science and Health. It seemed to me the nights were not long enough to read all I wanted. I cannot express my joy in knowing god as divine Mind, for I had believed in a personal God, and this seemed so impossible that I had grown to dislike to attend church. Jesus said, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

The first few years of my study of Christian Science seemed to be a test of my loyalty, and I surely had to prove each assertion I made. I felt so grateful for the change it had brought into my life that I wanted to tell all in whom I was interested, although I had been told not to talk too much. During one of these conversations the lady with whom I was talking asked me what I would do if I were suddenly attacked with appendicitis. I said I would depend on God. This seemed to make a great impression, but I resented her attitude. A few months later I had to prove my statement, as not only did I have a severe attack of appendicitis, but other complications were manifested. The Christian Science practitioner worked faithfully, and though the case yielded rather slowly, the healing was perfect. I am grateful for this experience, as through it I gained an invaluable lesson. On page 392 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy says: "Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously."

I am exceedingly grateful for the advantages I have had in gaining a better understanding of God. Christian Science is used daily in our home to meet all problems that present themselves, and we find it not only a curative but a preventive in overcoming and mastering all forms of error. I thank God for this Christ-teaching, and am grateful to Mrs. Eddy for bringing it to this age in such form that we can understand and demonstrate our oneness with God. My desire is to use the understanding I have, assimilate more of this truth, eliminate from my consciousness all that is unlike God, and love my neighbor as myself.—Rose Ellen Todd, Chicago, Ill.
