[Written for the Sentinel]

Contrast

At Truth's command forth from the tomb again,
Whom the last foe had held four long sad days,
One came; yet limited in many ways,
Through human aid his freedom to attain.
But Jesus, when he spurned the charnel cave,
Left in the tomb the trappings of the dead,
Folded aside the napkin from his head,
Walked free of all encumbrance of the grave.
Belief in death thus Jesus overcame,
Broke its false power and rose to higher spheres,
Leaving behind the dross of earthly fears.
But Lazarus died again; he did not frame
His consciousness to brave the coming years,
Nor meet the Master's call with loud acclaim.
