When on account of teaching in the evening schools I was...
When on account of teaching in the evening schools I was for many months deprived of being at the Wednesday evening meetings, it was a great privilege to have the testimonies in the Sentinel and Journal to read. I therefore send my testimony with a heart full of gratitude for the many blessings which have come to me during the past six years of regular and earnest study of Christian Science literature.
An artist in a strange land, dissatisfied, without means, without a religion, and swayed by influences beyond my control, I cared little for my existence, trusted nobody, and was afraid of everything. The first Christian Science service I attended in First Church of Christ, Scientist, New York city, was a true Christmas eve for me. It filled my heart with hope and happiness, and though very skeptical in the beginning, I am glad I followed out my decision to look into this teaching to see if there was any truth in it. Now I can laugh, and am almost ashamed of myself to think I ever could have been so blind as not at once to understand that the very Christ was leading me, and was indeed before me. How everything has changed! I can see now how for ignorance I have gained knowledge; for limitation I have infinite possibilities for good; for poverty I have all that I need; for fear of disease in myself and others I have a knowledge and understanding of Life.
As I studied Science and Health I began to see the possibility of improving my health, and I tested many sayings of Mrs. Eddy, thus working myself out of colds, hay-fever, pain, and all sorts of fears and habits of using material means for keeping well. As, like a feeble child, I grew out of many temptations and my horizon widened, I could understand more clearly than ever before the power of Truth. One day, after reading the pamphlet "Personal Contagion" and "What Our Leader Says," I had sufficient understanding instantaneously to heal a seemingly awful physical condition in a neighbor of mine. His wife wanted to run for a physician, since his throad, face, and eyes were swollen and he was unable to speak. A few words spoken, the reading of the pamphlet, and my study of the Lesson-Sermon, resulted in the fact that within eight hours the man was at work in his office. As a result of the giving of this experience in a testimony meeting last year in Buffalo, I am told that others realized for themselves the power of Truth to heal.
I am also most grateful for being able to speak to a large audience without fear, which was my secret wish for a long time. Teaching is now easy and natural without any special training for it. To understand the first commandment, to hear the Christian Science lecturers, and to read and study our literature, are privileges that cannot be too highly estimated. If it ever paid a man to be patient and honest in his work, it pays to be so in studying this religion with "signs following."—
