For the countless blessings that have come to me and mine...
For the countless blessings that have come to me and mine through Christian Science, I wish to express my thankfulness to God, also to bear testimony to a recent healing. On Monday night before Christmas, 1912, while at my work, I became very ill. When I reached home, I had a high fever, very bad throat trouble, and headache; also, I was extremely nervous. Next morning I was no better, but went to work as usual, thinking I could overcome this inharmony with the slight knowledge I had of Christian Science. In a little while I found that I was growing worse, and so went home. I immediately appealed to a practitioner for help, and the following morning the fever was gone and I was able to be up and about the house. On the second morning all manifestations of the ailment had entirely disappeared, and I was able to go to my work well and happy, as usual, and there has been no return of the trouble.
I am especially grateful for this healing, since before coming into Science I was subject to such attacks, and under medical treatment was always confined to my room for about a week. During the four years that Christian Science has been in our home, it has indeed proved an ever-present help. In the Preface to Science and Health (p. vii) our Leader has said, and truly, "To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, today is big with blessings."
Walter J. Jordan, Lexington, Ky.
For the benefit of the public, and with thankfulness to God and gratitude to Christian Science, I wish to tender a testimony of one of my many healings through Christian Science.
To begin with, I am very fond of outdoor sports, among them motor cycling being my favorite. On Aug. 3, 1912, I met some friends who were going to High Bridge (a place near Lexington, Ky.), and was asked to join them. They were in an automobile and had a good start before I could get my machine in working order. When I arrived at the city limits, they were nowhere in sight; so, putting on all speed, I decided to try to catch up with them. I was traveling very fast, when all at once I saw that I was coming to a sharp turn in the road. I applied the brake, as usual, but it failed to work. The only thing left for me to do was to try to make the turn—that is all I remember. The machine and I struck the stone wall on the right of the road, and I was thrown about forty feet below into a rocky creek bottom, directly on my face and head.
I regained consciousness about thirty minutes later and found my friends bending over me. I was taken to a hospital, where it was found that my injuries were very serious,—the tongue almost severed, the lower jaw ligaments torn loose, my nose broken in two places, and a cut in my face from forehead to chin, etc. The only thing I would let the surgeon do was to sew up my face. A Christian Science practitioner came to my room and began treatment immediately. The result was that I was out of the hospital in three days, and out on the street with my friends again on Aug. 10.
My nose healed without the aid of splints, and it is straight; my tongue healed without the aid of stitches or medicine; the same with my strained limb and shoulder; and last but not least, one can hardly distinguish a scar of any kind on my face, where fifteen stitches were taken. This is only one of my many healings; and yet some people say, "I wonder why he is a Christian Scientist."
It is not only for the physical healings that we are Scientists, but more for the spiritual uplift and a better and clearer understanding of the truth, which brings man into closer communication with God.—J. Earl Jordan, Morgan, Ky.
