Times and Express

In a recent issue I notice in your report of Dr.—'s lecture at Shipley on the prevention of disease, that he speaks of the "misnamed Christian Science."

It would be interesting to know why the doctor considers Christian Science to be misnamed. That its teachings are essentially scientific has been proved in the healing of a multitude of so-called diseases where the critic's own therapeutic system had been tried without avail, and this healing is based wholly and solely on the understanding of the fixed and unalterable law of God. That material so-called science is simply a conglomeration of theories is apparent to every thinker today, and that the only real science is the science of spiritual facts which Christ Jesus understood and demonstrated, is daily becoming more apparent. That Christian Science is essentially Christian has also been clearly proved, since it has relieved mankind from many of its sins and has made good men and women of innumerable people who were formerly drunkards and slaves to sin in many other phases; and this also has been done through the understanding of Christ Jesus' teachings.

All Christian Scientists agree with the doctor that we cannot be too cleanly in our homes and persons, in our food, etc.; but if Christ was not in the thoughts of men, even if all rules of cleanliness were fully carried out, this alone would neither heal disease nor destroy sin. That which needs to be cleansed primarily, and not secondarily, is the human mind, and Christian Science is redeeming mankind by teaching them the nature and availability of that Mind "which was also in Christ Jesus," for this is the only way in which the human mind can be cleansed. This process is, in fact, the transformation of the body by the renewal of the mind.

Perhaps the critic recognizes the following statement, which was made nineteen hundred years ago by the best healer of disease who ever appeared on earth, and who certainly healed in the only scientific and the only Christian way: "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man ; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. ...For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies: these are the things which defile a man: but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man." Christian Science is teaching and proving that to a clean mind, that is, a mind which understands and utilizes God's laws of health, holiness, and harmony, there can be only a clean and healthy body, and inevitably all mankind will recognize that the cure for disease is not in matter, but in conscious unity with the divine Mind. Thus Christian Science is essentially scientific and Christian.
