In early girlhood I became a member of a Christian church, having been led through family influence and educational training to accept its teaching. Later in life, when Christian Science was brought to my notice, I found that the dual command, to preach the gospel and heal the sick, had a value, a meaning, hitherto unknown; that there was no authority in Scripture for separating these, and that obedience to the second clause, as well as the first, was the practical test of faith in God and our understanding of the Master's teachings.

During my earlier years I often had to be taken out of school for sickness, and afterward as a teacher had to give up that profession altogether, because of ill health. Some years later, in married life, when the heavy clouds of sorrow were about us in experiencing the loss of a beloved child, an only son, Christian Science came as a rift in the cloud, and said that "joy cannot be turned into sorrow, for sorrow is not the master of joy" (Science and Health, p. 304).

When I was stricken down on a bed of sickness with a fever, away from home, a telegram from a dear friend came with the message, "No evil shall befall thee;" and I was forthwith healed, though the attending physician (whom I had called, in my helplessness to do otherwise) could not understand the fact that my temperature remained normal, although he came several times to test it, expecting a return of fever. In the mean time my husband had seen the Science friend all unknown to me, and credit for the cure had to be placed where it belonged, namely, with Christian Science. That was fifteen years ago, and it was my last experience with materia medica. In the years since then every attack of sickness which I or other members of the family have experienced, has been taken care of through Christian Science treatment. I have been healed of what is called typhoid pneumonia, and also of serious female troubles, not to mention some lesser ills; and in my family critical sicknesses have yielded to the power of Truth over error as realized in Christian Science. Surely, we have reason to be thankful for this truth.

I am very grateful for having had the privilege of an early Christian training, thankful for all the blessings which have come from it, and for a Christian home and parents; but when I began to investigate Christian Science, I found that the Bible, always a precious book to me, became more precious as it was read and studied in connection with that priceless Bible commentary, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy. Her inspired thought has brought to a sick and sinful world her discovery of that truth which Jesus said would make us free. This is the undivided garment, the healing of sickness as well as sin. "The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner," and on this rock is built the Christian Science church. To give up my earlier church for this Christ-idea means to me spiritual progress. It means to work out my own salvation in the light of Truth and to walk in that light so far as I receive it.—Mrs. Nellie S. Prescott, Newtonville, Mass.
